MacFarland, Darsie Lead Men's Golf To Third At ACC Championship

NEW LONDON, N.C. - On the heels of Chase MacFarland and Reed Darsie, the North Carolina men's golf team finished third after the first round of play Friday at the ACC Championship. MacFarland recorded a four-under 68 to put himself one stroke off the lead, while Darsie fired a three-under 69 to finish in a five-way tie for fifth. As a team, the Tar Heels finished the first round at six-under, much to the delight of Head Coach John Inman. "We played real solid. With Chase (MacFarland) and Reed (Darsie) putting seven-under on our first two groups, that was a big bolster to our day. We just need to continue to play like we did today. It was fun - fun to watch." Three strokes in front of Carolina are both Duke and Florida State, who each finished atop the leader board at nine-under. Meanwhile, Clemson, NC State, and Wake Forest all ended the first day at four-under in a tie for fourth. MacFarland's round was highlighted by six birdies, including back-to-back birdies on holes five and six. Darsie had four birdies, including one on 18 after a bogey on 17. Kevin O'Connell also finished under par with a two-under 70 to place in a tie for 10th. He had five birdies, but a double on hole nine brought him to an even-36 for the front nine. Henry Zaytoun III and Barden Berry both turned in a three-over 75 and are currently in 37th. Leading for the individuals is NC State's Matt Hill at five-under. Florida State's Matthew Savage and Wake Forest's Webb Simpson are tied with MacFarland at four-under. The ACC Championship also marks another Carlyle Cup event. One point will be awarded to either Duke or Carolina depending on which team finishes higher. Carolina currently leads 16-5 and has already clinched a win in this year's competition. For the seventh consecutive year, the ACC Championship is being held at the Old North State Club, which features a par 72, 7,102-yard layout. The second round will begin Saturday with players beginning to tee off at 8:30 a.m.
