Tar Heels Cap Outstanding Semester With NFHCA Honors

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Nine North Carolina field hockey players have been named to the 2007 National Academic Squad, announced Monday by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA). To earn a spot on the squad, a student-athlete must carry a cumulative GPA of at least 3.3 through the fall semester. Tar Heels honored were Casey Burns, Rachel Dawson, Elizabeth Drazdowski, Riley Foster, Hilary Hartman, Heather Kendell, Louise McNutt, Colleen Murphy and Brianna O'Donnell. Kendell was honored for the fifth time in her career and Dawson for the fourth. Foster and O'Donnell made the list for the second year in a row. The Tar Heels also were honored with a National Academic Team Award for achieving a team grade point average of 3.0 or better during the fall semester. UNC was one of 43 Division I teams recognized. Carolina's team GPA for the fall semester was 3.11, the highest ever for the program. The Tar Heels achieved that level academically while excelling on the field, claiming NCAA and Atlantic Coast Conference championships with a 24-0 record. Seven players were named to the Dean's List, seven were selected for the All-ACC Academic team, and Dawson was recognized as the ACC Scholar-Athlete for field hockey.
