Carolina Women's Golfers Fifth At SJSU Spartan Invitational

SAN JOSE, CALIF. - The University of North Carolina women's golf team fired a 17-over-par 305 in the first round and is in fifth place of the SJSU Spartan Invitational. Host San Jose State leads the field of 15 teams with a nine-over 297 total. Junior Sydney Crane, of Jamestown, N.C., led the Tar Heels firing a three-over 75 on Monday and is tied for 11th. Two Tar Heels are among eight players tied for 18th place at four-over 76 - Lauren Hunt, a junior from Little River, S.C., and Kate Thomas, a sophomore from Murwillumbah, Australia. Senior Ann Laney, from Charlotte, N.C., shot 78 and is tied for 28th place while senior Laura Caniff, from Russell, Ky., posted an 80 and is tied for 42nd. Selanee' Henderson of UC Irvine leads all individuals after firing a one-under-par 71. Christina Yoon of Washington and Kim Lorenzana of UC Irvine are tied for second place at even par 72. Three players are tied for fourth place at one-over 73 - California's Pia Halbig and Allison Goodman and San Jose State's Kanika Minocha. UC Irvine is one stroke behind San Jose State in the race for the team title at 10-over 298. California is in third place with a 299 total while Washington is fourth at 302, three shots ahead of the Tar Heels at 305. San Francisco is in sixth place with a 308 total while Oregon is seventh at 309 and Colorado and Long Beach State are tied for eighth place with 311 totals.
The 54-hole event continues through Tuesday and is being played at Almaden Country Club which features a par 72, 6,179-yard layout. |
