Tar Heels Move Up In Rankings

Feb. 12, 2008

Chapel Hill, N.C. ----- The University of North Carolina gymnastics team is ranked No. 19 in the latest national rankings, up two spots from last week. Rankings are based on each team's average score in meets from Jan. 14 to Feb. 11. Carolina (9-0) posted a season-high 195.450 last week against NC State and has an average score of 194.342.

Beginning Feb. 18, teams are ranked according to their regional qualifying score (RQS). Qualification for regional competition is based on a team's and an all-around competitor's six best regular-season-meet scores, of which three must be away. To obtain the regional qualifying score (RQS), the high score is eliminated and the remaining five scores are averaged. Once each team has enough meets, the rankings are determined based on RQS.

The Tar Heels are ranked 15th on floor exercise, 19th on vault, 21st on uneven bars and 22nd on balance beam.

Individually, Christine Nguyen is ranked 21st on the balance beam with a 9.817 average score.
