Tar Heels Eager To Compete In Last Home Meet Of The Season

Feb. 29, 2008

Chapel Hill, N.C. - The University of North Carolina gymnastics team will host the University of Maryland, the University of New Hampshire and the College of William & Mary in the Tar Heel Invitational on Saturday, March 1. The meet will begin at 1:00 p.m. and will mark the Tar Heels' third and final home meet of the season. Head coach Derek Galvin had this to say:

"Our team is pleased to be hosting the teams from the University of Maryland, the University of New Hampshire, and the College of William and Mary in this year's Tar Heel Invitational. This is the final home meet for our seniors and the team wants it to be a special one for them. Unfortunately, Sarrie Rubin will not be able to compete due to an injury she sustained in our meet last weekend, but we are looking forward to honoring Sarrie, along with our other seniors Shawna Kelly, Angela Lauten, and Alice Xu.

Maryland and New Hampshire compete within the East Atlantic Gymnastics League as do the Tar Heels, so this will be a good preview of what we may see at the EAGL Championships at the end of March. In addition to the absence of Sarrie Rubin from the Carolina line-up this weekend, sophomore Teri Diamond will also be unable to compete due to an elbow injury. Other members of the Carolina team are prepared to step-in and fill Sarrie and Teri's spots in the line-up. We certainly would be much happier if Sarrie and Teri were able to enjoy this meet as competitors, but we know they will be pulling just as hard for their teammates to perform well as they would be doing if they were in the line-up themselves.

It should be a great meet, and we hope there will be a strong contingent of Carolina gymnastics fans on hand to help us honor Shawna, Angela, Sarrie, and Alice for all that they have shared with us while here at Carolina."

The UNC gymnastics team remains unranked this week, as the team has not competed in enough meets to compute a Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) system. Regardless, the Tar Heels continue to make strong efforts to reach their goal of becoming EAGL Champions.
