Soccer America MVPs List Includes Averbuch & Heath
Dec. 20, 2007
For the first time since introducing the MVP awards in 1976, Soccer America has selected first and second teams for women's soccer in 2007. No designation is made by position, just an 11-player first team and 11-player second team. Tar Heel junior midfielder Yael Averbuch of Upper Montclair, N.J. was named first team and sophomore midfielder Tobin Heath of Basking Ridge, N.J. was named second team. The 2007 first team features five holdovers from the 2006 MVP selections: Yael Averbuch (North Carolina), Kerri Hanks (Notre Dame), Stephanie Lopez (Portland), Kasey Moore (Texas) and Ashlee Pistorius (Texas A&M). For all the MVPs ... Second-team selection Christina DiMartino was also a 2006 MVP. This year's first team reflects women's soccer's promising future. Only four players are seniors: Rachel Buehler (Stanford), Meghan Schnur (Connecticut), Lopez and Pistorius. Nine players are Americans, along with Canadian Amanda Cicchini (West Virginia) and Japan international Mami Yamaguchi (Florida State). Goalie Kristin Olsen represents 2007 champion USC.
