Rams' Strong Second Half Leads to 80-58 Win Over Charlotte
March 3, 2010
KINGSTON, R.I. - Senior Keith Cothran and Lamonte Ulmer combined for 30 points to lead the Rhode Island men's basketball team (21-7; 9-6 Atlantic 10) to an 80-58 victory over Charlotte Wednesday night at the Ryan Center on Senior Night. Cothran scored a game-high 18 points as he connected on 8-of-16 shots from the field, while Ulmer chipped in with 12 points. Junior Delroy James and freshman Akeem Richmond also scored in double-figures as they finished with 13 and 11 points, respectively. James also pulled down a game-high eight rebounds. Charlotte jumped out to an early 8-2 lead at the 15:46 mark. Rhody struggled from the field during the opening stretch as it connected on just 1-of-5 field goals from the floor. Rhody fought back to take an 11-10 lead thanks to a 9-2 run over the next four and a half minutes. Sophomore guard Stevie Mejia capped the run with a 3-pointer. The 49ers reclaimed the lead 10 seconds later and went on to hold the lead for the next seven minutes. URI took a one-point lead thanks to a 3-pointer from the top of the key by junior Marquis Jones. The Rams held on to the lead for the remainder of the first half and took a 28-26 advantage into the locker room. The Rams outshot Charlotte from the floor in the first half (38.7-37.5 percent), but the 49ers outrebounded the Rams 21-16. Both teams struggled from beyond the arc, but Rhody still held a 20.0-14.3 advantage. Coming out of the locker room, both teams continued to play right with one another as no team led by more than five points for the first six and half minutes of the second half. The 49ers took a 39-38 lead with 13:51 to go in the game, but Rhody took control of the game as it went on a 15-0 run over the next four half minutes to open up a 53-39 lead. Ulmer scored five points during the stretch and Rhody never looked back as it went on to lead by as many as 24 points. Rhody outshot Charlotte 58.3-44.4 percent from the floor in the second half and only committed three turnovers compared to Charlotte's 10 miscues. Prior to the game, URI honored seniors Keith Cothran and Lamonte. During their four-year careers, the senior duo has led the Rams to 84 wins. The Rams return to action on Saturday for their 2009-10 season finale as the head to Massachusetts. Tipoff is slated for 4 p.m.
