URI Golf Roundup: July 12-29
July 13, 2008 Mark Stevens, a native of Concord, N.H., won the 2008 New Hampshire State Amateur Championship. Stevens, who had advanced to the finals in 2006 and 2007, downed Ryan Friel, 2-and-1. He became the sixth different golfer to win the N.H. Amateur title in as many years. In the final match, Stevens never trailed. After halving the first three holes, Stevens took a one up advantage with a birdie at the 375-yard par 4 fourth, but lost that lead two holes later to a Friel birdie at No. 6. The URI golf standout bounced back with an eagle on the par 5 seventh, then ran his lead to 3-up after winning holes 8 and 9. After the match evened up after 15, Stevens finished off with birdie-par-eagle to go 3-up after the first 18 holes. The players tied their 19th hole and Stevens dropped to 2-up after the 20th. The next eight holes were halved between the two golfers, before Friel got it to 1-down with a birdie on their 29th hole. Stevens went back to 2-up on the 13th and, after four more halved pars, he closed out the match, 2 & 1. Patrick Pelletier also played well during the NH Amateur. He and Stevens were tied after the first two rounds (stroke play), with each golfer carding a two-day total of 143. Pelletier shot a 74 on day one, before firing off a 69 on day two. Stevens went 72-71 for his stroke play rounds. Pelletier advanced to the quarterfinal rounds of match play, dropping a 1-up match to Stephen Kozlowski on July 11.
July 15, 2008
The junior golfer fired off a two-day total of 140, thanks to an opening round 68, followed by a second-day 72. In that opening round, Pelletier played the back nine in a remarkable 30.
July 24, 2008 The New England Amateur Championship is normally a three-day, 72-hole event, with a final day 36-hole round to determine the medalist. However, torrential rain forced the tournament to be shortened to just 36 holes. Larsen, a native of Castleton, Vt., finished in a three-way tie for fourth place overall. He shot a one-under total of 139. Valois tied for seventh overall, firing a one-over total of 141.
July 29, 2008 By virtue of their finishes, Valois and Spitz earned a spot in the field of the 2008 U.S. Amateur Championship, held Aug. 18-24 at the famed Pinehurst Resort courses No. 2 and No. 4 in Pinehurst, N.C. Valois carded nine birdies and an eagle in his two rounds of play. Spitz recorded back-to-back rounds of 67, as another former URI golfer - Devon Quigley - caddied for him. Spitz solidified his finish with three consecutive birdies on 14, 15, and 16 in second round play.
