Men's Soccer Drops 1-0 Heartbreaker to UMass in A-10 Semifinals
Nov. 17, 2007 DAYTON, Ohio - The second-seeded Rhode Island men's soccer team fell to third-seeded Massachusetts, 1-0, in the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Championship, Friday night at Baujan Field in Dayton, Ohio. After a scoreless first half where the Rams outshot the Minutemen by a 10-1 margin, UMass returned from the break and took a quick 1-0 lead when Douglas Rappaport bent a corner kick into the back of the goal at the 47:05 mark. Rhody continued to apply the pressure, forcing Massachusetts' Zack Simmons to make 11 saves throughout the game. The Rams had numerous chances to even the score, including a point-blank blast from senior Geoffrey Cameron (Attleboro, Mass.) in the midst of back-to-back-to-back corner kicks in the 68th minute. Positioned in the middle of the box, Cameron drilled a quick shot on goal which Simmons was able to block to keep the Rams off the board. Senior Lukasz Tumicz (Bisztynek, Poland) followed with a shot that deflected off the post in the 74th minute. Cameron led the Rams with a game-high five shots while freshman Greg Balicki (Wilbraham, Mass.) took four. Sophomore Chris Pennock (Middlesborough, England) made two stops in goal for the Rams. In all, the Rams outshot the Minutemen, 24-5, and held an 11-3 advantage in shots on goal. URI also out-cornered UMass, 8-4. Cameron, senior Callum Bissett (Pencaitland, Scotland) and junior Adam Howarth (Isle of Wight, England) all were named to the All-Championship Team. With the loss, Rhode Island ends its season with a 9-8-2 record. 2007 Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer Championship All-Championship Team
