URI Men Place Seventh at Atlantic 10 Championships

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - The University of Rhode Island men's swimming & diving team placed seventh at the 2008 Atlantic 10 Swimming & Diving Championships Saturday afternoon at St. Bonaventure University in New York. The Rams finished with 287.5 points.

Massachusetts captured the A-10 crown with 791.5 points, followed by St. Bonaventure (567.5 points), Xavier (426.5 points), Duquesne (402 points), Fordham (357 points), La Salle (332 points), URI, Saint Louis (257 points), and George Washington (174 points).

Sophomore Gerard Donlevy (Lake Grove, N.Y.) posted a time of 1:48.48 in the 200-yard backstroke, which placed him second. Classmate Matthew Zrada (Harleysville, Pa.) placed 10th in the 1650 freestyle event with a time of 16:34.90 while sophomore Michael Ennis (Livingston, N.J.) finished 30th (18:02.07).

Freshman Joseph Sagginairo (Bellport, N.Y.) recorded an eight-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:57.55.

In the 100-yard freestyle, junior Derek Denard (Doylestown, Pa.) finished 15th in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 47.09. Freshman Daniel Backler (Newburyport, Mass.) placed 12th-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:09.45.

The meet concluded with the 400-yard freestyle relay as the URI team of Donlevy, Denard, freshman Matthew Burak (North Easton, Mass.), and senior Jason Jacintho (Dartmouth, Mass.) placed seventh with a time of 3:07.30.
