ORONO, Maine -- Kassandra Spitler tallied the lone Rhody goal as the Rams tied Maine, 1-1, in double overtime on Sunday afternoon.

The junior forward found the back of the net in the 75th minute (74:57), off a pinpoint pass from Alexis Veith. Spitler caught the pass, settled it, and fired past Black Bears Jasmine Phillips.

"Kassandra scored a terrific goal, off a great pass from Alexis," said head coach Zac Shaw. "We took some steps forward today, and created some opportunities to score."

Just under five minutes later, Maine tallied the equalizer off a corner kick. Carolyne Nellis scored off a headed, past URI goalkeeper Jackie Fede.

"Maine is a well-coached team and is always well-prepared," said head coach Zac Shaw. "It was a game we had a chance to win, but overall we need to do a better job defending set pieces."

In the first overtime, Fede stopped the lone Black Bears attempt on goal, putting the contest into another 10 minute period.

Erese Fair had a one-on-one chance in the 109th minute (108:47) but could not convert.

Both teams played to a scoreless first half, with Rhode Island attempting seven shots - three of which were on-goal. Maine put two shots on goal - the first coming just two minutes into the match. But Fede was able to make the stop on both shots, preserving the 0-0 tie at the break. She made seven saves in 110:00 of action.

For the match, URI outshot Maine, 11-9 - including a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. The Rams attempted two corner kicks and committed nine fouls.

"we're a work in progress and while I'm frustrated with the outcome, I'm happy with our effort," Shaw stated. "It was another step in the right direction."

URI returns to action on Friday, Sept. 5 when it hosts Siena at the URI Soccer Complex.
