PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Senior men's swimmer Ryan Sheatsley (Allentown, Pa.) and senior softball player Jill Anderson (Cohoes, N.Y.) have been named Atlantic 10 Male and Female Student-Athlete of the Year for the University of Rhode Island.

Sheatsley was a mechanical engineering major who carried a 3.88 GPA into his final semester. This past year, he was named to the Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference Team as well as the CoSIDA Academic All-District Second Team (University Division). At the Atlantic 10 Championships in February, Sheatsley set a varsity record in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:52.54 and was a member of two relay teams which established varsity records: 400-yard medley relay team (3:25.64) and the 800-yard freestyle relay team (6:52.64).

Anderson - who was honored as the 2008 Rhode Island Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women's (RIAIAW) Distinguished Student-Athlete of the Year earlier this year - maintained a 3.78 grade-point average as a political science major/philosophy minor. During her time at Rhode Island, Anderson served as a member of the Peer Advocate Program, Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), URI Athletic Dept. Life Skills Advisory Board, Mentor/Tutor Internship Program as well as the Phi Eta Sigma (Freshman) and Chi Alpha Sigma (NCAA) honor societies. Anderson also served as a volunteer for Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation as well as the Gilda's Club Cancer Foundation.

The fourteen Atlantic 10 directors of athletics vote to recognize individuals on each campus as Scholar-Athletes of the Year.
