Thornton, Jennings Named Co-MVP's at Women's Track & Field Banquet

May 9, 2008

KINGSTON, R.I. -- Sarah Thornton and Jasmine Jennings were named co-Most Valuable/Most Improved Track & Field Performers at the URI Women's Track & Field/Cross Country team banquet, held on May 8.

Freshman Mary Najarian was recognized as the cross country squad's Most Valuable Performer. Retiring Senior Associate Director of Athletics Lauren Anderson was also honored with a special award during the evening's festivites.

Thornton became the Atlantic 10's first four-time discus champion, winning another title en route to being named the Most Outstanding Field Performer at last weekend's conference championship in Amherst, Mass. She also captured the weight throw at the 2008 A-10 Indoor Championship, earning the Most Outstanding Field Performer at that meet. Thornton holds the school record in the discus and NCAA Regional Championship qualifying mark in both the discus and hammer.

Jennings shattered the URI and Atlantic 10 championship record en route to winning the hammer throw at the 2008 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track & Field Championship. Jennings has qualifed for her first NCAA East regional championships in the event. During the 2008 indoor campaign, she won both the New England and ECAC titles in the weight throw, establishing a new school record in the weight throw (65-02). Jennings narrowly missed advancing to the NCAA Indoor Championship.

Najarian was the top URI finisher in every race she competed in during the cross country season this past Fall. As a freshman, she led the Rams to a 12th place finish at the Atlantic 10 championship with a 38th-place overall individual effort.

Additionally, head coach Laurie Feit-Melnick presented outgoing Sr. Associate AD Lauren Anderson with a special award in honor of her upcoming retirement and for her 31 years of service to URI Track & Field and Cross Country as the program's founder, coach, and sport administrator.
