    Men's 4x400m relay places second with second-fastest time in school history

    THIS YEAR: Senior Joey Hughes remains one of the top 400m runners in the country and one of the most valuable members of the Trojan team running in the 400m, 200m, 4x100m and 4x400m races and serving as a team captain. Ranks sixth all-time on the USC 400m list with a time of 45.05.

    2011: Another outstanding season as he earned All-America honors in the 400m race, placing fifth at the NCAA Championships with a time of 45.64...Also ran a leg on the 4x400m team which placed ninth, the first team out of qualifying for the finals and first-team All-America honors. Had a PR of 45.05 in the 400m dash to place second at the Pac-10 Championships on May 14...also took second place in the 200m dash with a time of 20.87...set a PR in the 200m of 20.84 in the semifinals on May 13...ran a leg on the 4x100m relay which placed sixth with a time of 40.55 and anchored the 4x400m relay with a split of 44.78 to capture the Pac-10 title with a time of 3:03.38, good for 10th on USC's all-time list. Ran the leadoff leg for the 4x400m relay team which ran the fourth-fastest time in school history of 3:02.87 on April 9 at the Texas Relays.

    2010: Earned All-America honors in the 400m race, placing third at the NCAA Championships with a time of 45.23, coming back from seventh place down the stretch. Also earned All-America status in the 4x400m race as USC placed fifth in the finals with a time of 3:04.54. Won the Pac-10 400m title with a time of 45.16, took second in the 200m dash (21.11) ran the anchor leg for the second-place 4x100m team (39.88) and the second leg for the winning 4x400m relay team (3:06.07). Had a PR of 45.15, the seventh-fastest time ever by a Trojan, on June 9 in the NCAA semifinals. Won the Dual Meet 400m race for the second straight season, while taking second in the 200m and winning as part of the 4x400m relay team. Earned the U.S. a silver in the 400m with a time of 45.79 at the U23 NACAC Championships in July.

    2009: Had season-best time of 21.13 in the 200m to place second in the Dual Meet on May 2. Had a then-PR of 45.93 in the 400m dash to capture second place at the Pac-10 Championships. Ran the third leg of the 4x100m (2nd) and 4x400m (1st) relays at the Pac-10s. Placed second at the NCAA West Regional with a time of 46.05. Ran the third leg on both of USC's winning relay teams at the NCAA West Regional. Reached the semifinals in the 400m at the NCAAs, but his time of 45.958 was 11th, with the top nine advancing. Ran the second leg for the 4x400m relay team with placed seventh with the eighth-fastest time in school history of 3:04.18 on June 13. Earned a Gold Medal at the Pan Am Junior games as part of USA's winning 4x400m relay team, along with teammate Duane Walker. Hughes also placed fourth in the open 400m with a time of 47.29.

    HIGH SCHOOL: Hughes prepped at Long Beach Poly in Long Beach, Calif. where he was a teammate of current Trojan Bryshon Nellum. They teammed together while juniors to help lead the Jackrabbits to the California state title. As a senior, Hughes did not lose a 400m race all year and won the 400m and 200m titles at the CIF Championships. Also won the 400m race at the prestigious Penn Relays. Ran a leg on the winning 4x400m team at the 2008 Simplot Championships. Had bests of 46.26 in the 400m and 20.9 in the 200m.

    PERSONAL: Joey was born on Oct. 26, 1990 in Long Beach, Calif....Likes to read the Bible, go to church, see movies and loves to hang out with his grandparents....Favorite actor is Will Smith, favorite singers are Marvin Sapp and Beyonce and his favorite movie is 300...He is the son of Taneisha and Joey Hughes... His uncle Prentice Jones and cousin Richard Smith also attended USC...His uncle Lindsay Hughes was a donor for the McDonald's Swim Stadium...Joey is a Psychology major with a minor in Dance at USC. Started the organization Athletes Pressing Beyond Expectations.
