Trojans Strong Across The Board During Long Day Of Action At Triton Invitational

    The action for the Trojans began at 9:30 a.m. and didn't end until after 8 p.m., but USC had a strong day across the board at the Triton Invitational in La Jolla, Calif. today (April 23).

    The day's action began with freshman Nathan Bultman taking 13th and sophomore David Sellens placing 21st in the men's invitational hammer throw. Bultman had a best mark of 185-2 (56.44m) and Sellens' top throw went for 176-8 (53.88m). Bultman than competed in the men's open shot put and placed fourth with a best mark of 57-9.75 (17.62m).

    Bultman saved his best for last, posting a PR of 181-3 (55.25m) to place 19th in the invitational discus throw competition. It was a 12-foot PR for Bultman and the top throw by a Trojan male this season.

    Junior Tanya Sapa then placed 12th in the women's invitational shot put competition with a mark of 50-8.75 (15.45m).

    The men's invitational shot put was the final throwing competition of the day and sophomore Nick Ponzio had a season-best throw of 63-8.75 (19.42m) to finish sixth. He also had a mark of 63-6 (19.35m) in his series. Freshman Matthew Katnik placed 12th in the same competition with a mark of 60-7.25 (18.47m).

    The only USC jumper competing was sophomore Madisen Richards in her second week back from injury. She placed eighth in the women's invitational long jump with a best leap of 19-0.75 (5.81m). All six of her attempts were landed cleanly.

    The first running event for the Trojans was the women's 800m race. Redshirt sophomore Rebekah Ent had a season-best time of 2:12.24 to place 12th to lead USC. Also competing were freshman Amber Gore (29th, 2:17.38), freshman Rachel Glynn (39th, 2:19.85), freshman Taylor Seamans (44th, 2:21.61) and senior Natasha Strickland (56th, 2:25.65).

    In the men's 800m, sophomore Jordon Wallin finished 13th with a college-best time of 1:52.83, sophomore Mitchell Cameron was 50th with a season-best time of 1:59.90 and senior Will Robinson finished 61st with a time of 2:03.59.

    Redshirt freshman Madison Ricks ran her first 5000m race as a Trojan and placed seventh with a time of 10:44.72.

    Seniors Jenna Tong and Katerina Berdousi competed in their second 3000m steeplechase race of the season. Tong placed second, tops among collegians, with a time of 10:50.66 and Berdousi had a PR of 11:05.54 to finish sixth. Berdousi moved from ninth to seventh on USC's all-time 3000m SC list, a list where Tong sits in fourth place.

    Cameron came back to run in his first 3000m steeplechase race and placed 12th with a time of 10:24.91.

    Freshman Sophia Racette was the only Trojan woman to compete in the 5000m race. In her first career 5000m race, she placed 17th with a time of 18:50.96.

    Finally, freshmen Nicolaus Jakowec and Trent Rule set PRs in the men's 5000m race. Jakowec placed seventh with a time of 14:46.18 and Rule finished 13th with a time of 14:57.80.
