Hammer thrower Eva Orban and discus specialist Kate Hutchinson led the way for USC yesterday (April 25) at the UC San Diego Invitational in San Diego, Calif.

The junior Orban won the invitational hammer competition with a throw of 223-1 (68.00m), while the next best collegiate thrower placed fifth at 196-5 feet. Freshman Lauren Guerrieri had a throw of 140-1 (42.70m), while redshirt freshman Tamara Baumann fouled out.

The redshirt senior Hutchinson had a season-best discus throw of 178-1 (54.29m) to place eighth in the competition, but first among collegiate throwers. Guerrieri threw the discus 147-10 (45.07m).

In the men's open pole vault competition, freshman Taylor Slingsby had a season-best clearance of 15-9 (4.80m) to finish first among college vaulters. Also pole vaulting for USC were senior Graham Bockmiller (15-1), freshman Justin Matoesian (15-1), sophomore Charles Fasi (14-7 ¼), senior Charles Heffern (14-1 ¼) and senior Daniel Corrigan (15-7 1/4).

In the women's open pole vault competition, redshirt senior Chun Mei Nickles placed 12th with a season-best vault of 12-4 (3.76m), junior Kenisha Strong cleared 10-4 1/4 while sophomore Jasmine Knight finished at 9-8 1/2.
