Lopes Takes 3rd In Heptathlon & Norwitz 8th In Decathlon At Pac-12 Multi-Events Championships|

Lyndsey Lopes took third with a personal best in the heptathlon and Daniel Norwitz eighth in the decathlon during the final day of the 2017 Pac-12 Multi-Events Championships held at the Whyte Track & Field Center in Corvallis, Ore. today (May 7). Lopes earned six points for the USC women's team and Norwitz one for the USC men's team in the Pac-12 Championships, as the multi-events represent the first of 21 events in the team competition. The remaining 20 events of the 2017 Pac-12 Track & Field Championships will be contested at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. on May 13-14.
Lopes beat her previous best heptathlon total by three points to finish with 5371 points and bettered her eighth-place standing on USC's all-time list in the event.
Norwitz got the day started for the Trojans by running 17.29 (+2.1w) in the decathlon 110m hurdles to finish eighth and earn 594 points.
Lopes opened her day with a best long jump of 18-3.75/5.58m (+0.4) to finish sixth in the event and earn 723 points. Harmon-Thomas had a season-best jump of 18-10.00 /5.74m (+1.3) to finish second in the event and earn 771 points. Lopes remained in third and Harmon-Thomas remained in eight in the overall scoring.
Norwitz then had his best discus throw attempt in his final turn with a PR of 85-2 (25.97m) to earn 386 points. He was seventh in the event and remained in eighth place overall.
Norwitz followed with a PR of 12-9.50 (3.90m) in the pole vault to earn another 590 points. Again, he was seventh in the event and remained eighth overall.
Lopes finished sixth in the javelin throw with a best mark of 118-9 (26.21m) to earn 595 points. She now was fourth overall with 4566 points and one event remaining. Harmon-Thomas had fouls on her first two javelin throw attempts, but then landed a throw of 85-2 (25.97m) to earn 401 points. Her total of 4185 points after sixth events put her into 10th place.
Lopes ran a college personal best of 2:21.34 to finish sixth in the 800m race to earn 805 points. That pushed her total to a slight PR of 5371 points and a third-place finish. Harmon-Thomas had a time of 2:41.49 to finish 13th in the event and earn 556 points. She finished 10th overall in her first college heptathlon with 4741 points.
Norwitz had a best javelin throw of 156-9 (47.79m) in his final attempt to finish fifth in the event and earn 556 points.
The 10th and final decathlon event was the 1500m race and Norwitz placed eighth with a time of 5:40.05 to earn 351 points. He finished the two days of his first college decathlon with 5656 points, good for eighth place and a point in the team competition.
