    Eric Sloan finished second in the men's long jump to earn a trip to the NCAA Championships in the event and 11 Trojan athletes advanced to NCAA quarterfinals tomorrow during the first day of the 2017 NCAA West Preliminary Rounds held at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas today (May 25). To advance in an event to the NCAA T&F Championships in Eugene, Ore. from June 7-10, an athlete must finish in the top 12 at the West Preliminary Rounds.

    • The redshirt co-captain Sloan and junior Dominic Smallwood were the first two Trojans in action in a field event when they competed in the men's long jump. Each competitor in four flights of 12 would get three attempts, with the top 12 advancing to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. Smallwood was in the third flight and Sloan the fourth, which were contested simultaneously. By the time they jumped, five competitors in the first two flights of 12 had landed a mark of at least 25 feet. Sloan's first jump went for a wind-aided PR of 26-4.25/8.03m (+2.4w) which put him in second and he passed through his next two attempts, finishing second overall and moving on to nationals. Smallwood improved on each attempt, but his final attempt of 25-0.50/7.63m (+2.2w) landed him in 17th place.

    • Sophophore Margaux Jones closed the day's action with a 14th-place finish in the women's long jump, two spots out of advancing to nationals. Her best jump of 20-5.75/6.24m came in her final attempt, after two identical rounds of 20-2.50/6.16 jumps. It took 20-8.50/6.31m to advance. Junior Madisen Richards had a jump of 19-6.75/5.96m in the first round followed by two fouls to finish 31st.

    • Freshman Anna Cockrell opened action for the Trojans on the track competing in the first heat of the women's 400m hurdles. To advance to quarterfinals tomorrow, an athlete would have to finish in the top three of its heat or have one of the next six best times. Cockrell cruised to victory in her heat with a time of 58.34 to automatically advance to the quarterfinals. Senior co-captain Amalie Iuel was next in the fourth heat of the women's 400m hurdles and she too won with ease, posting a time of 57.21. They advanced to tomorrow's quarter final with the fastest qualifying time by Iuel and the third-fastest qualifying time by Cockrell.

    • Junior Deanna Hill had a wind-aided PR of 11.01 (+4.7w) to win her 100m heat and advance to the quarterfinals with the third-fastest time. Redshirt sophomore Ky Westbrook took third in her heat with a time of 11.23 (+5.2w) to automatically advance, posting the 13th-fastest time. Freshman Zaria Francis had a time of 11.49 (+3.8w) to finish fourth in her heat and 30th overall and senior Destinee Brown had a time of 11.60 (+3.8w) to finish sixth in her heat and 40th overall.

    • In the men's 100m races, freshman T.J. Brock had a wind-aided PR of 10.16 (+4.2w) to finish fourth in his heat and 16th overall, advancing to the quarterfinal tomorrow on time. Freshman Alex Barnum had a wind-aided PR of 10.30 (+4.5w) to take fifth in his heat and finish 26th overall. Sophomore Christian Sourapas had a wind-aided PR of 10.36 (+3.0w) to finish sixth in his heat and 32nd overall.

    • Junior Kendall Ellis (52.45) and senior co-captain Cameron Pettigrew (52.55) won their women's 400m heats to automatically advance to tomorrow's quarterfinal. Ellis had the fifth and Pettigrew the sixth-fastest times among the qualifiers. Freshman Kyra Constantine had a time of 54.37 to finish fifth in her heat and 30th overall, while freshman Kayla Richardson was seventh in her heat and 40th overall with a time of 55.20.

    • Both junior co-captain Ricky Morgan Jr. and freshman Michael Norman took second in their men's 400m heats to automatically advance to tomorrow's quarterfinal in the event. Norman was fourth overall with a time of 45.82 and Morgan Jr. was 15th overall with a time of 46.42.

    • Sophomore Mikaela Smith finished fourth in the final women's 800m heat with a time of 2:08.33, but that was the fastest non-automatic qualifying time and she advanced to tomorrow's quarterfinal with the 11th-fastest time.

    • Junior Robert Ford took second in his heat and finished second overall in the men's 800m prelims with a time of 1:49.30 to advance automatically to the quarterfinal tomorrow. Redshirt junior Alex Rohani finished eighth in his 800m heat and 46th overall with a time of 1:54.86.
