March 1, 2017
USC Director of Track & Field Caryl Smith Gilbert was named 2017 Moutain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Women’s Coach of the Year and Randall Cunningham was named Men’s Athlete of the Meet today (March 1), following the MPSF Indoor T&F Championships held Feb. 24-25 in Seattle, Wash.
Smith Gilbert guided the USC women’s team to the title, its third in four seasons of competing in the conference. The USC women amassed 125 points, 20 more than second-place Oregon. Smith Gilbert was also named the MPSF Women’s Coach of the Year in 2014 and 2015 and last season was named the MPSF’s Men’s Coach of the Year.
The Trojan women won four events: Kendall Ellis in the 200m (with a track record of 23.09), Margaux Jones in the Long Jump (for second straight season), Cameron Pettigrew in the 400m (with a PR of 52.27) and the 4x400m relay team of Pettigrew, Amalie Iuel, Ellis and Deanna Hill (which tied the meet record of 3:32.54). Also, taking second place in events were: Destinee Brown in the 200m, Anna Cockrell in the 60m hurldes with a PR of 8.11, Brittany Mann in the shot put with a school record of 55-9.25 (17.00m) and Mikaela Smith in the 800m with a PR of 2:05.94.
Cunningham won the MPSF men’s high jump title with a meet-record clearance of 7-5.25 (2.27m) which earned him the Men’s Athlete of the Meet Award. For the reigning NCAA Champion Cunningham, it was also an indoor PR and the top jump by a collegian this indoor season.
Cunningham joins Iuel (2016) and Jessica Davis (2014) as Trojans being named either MPSF Men’s or Women’s Athletes of the Meet.
