USC T&F Heads To NCAA West Preliminary Rounds In Austin, Texas

    USC is sending 16 female and 15 male athletes to compete at the 2017 NCAA West Preliminary Rounds to be held at Mike A. Myers in Austin, Texas from May 25-27. USC’s men’s team is ranked No. 14 and the women’s team is ranked No. 4 in the country. There will be 48 athletes in each event, with the top 12 after the Preliminary Rounds in each region moving on to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. from June 7-10. The meet will be streamed live on Texassports.com/watch on May 25 (at 9 a.m. PT), May 26 (at 10 a.m.) and May 27 (at 11 a.m.).

    TOP 30 TROJANS: USC currently has 22 individual times/marks and all four relays which rank among the Top 30 in the country: Men - Cunningham (T-7th - HJ), Katnik (19th - SP), Morgan (28th - 400m), Morris (12th - 110m HH), Norman (7th - 400m), Ponzio (14th - SP), Sloan (T-19 - LJ, 6th - TJ), Sourapas (T-26th - 200m), Thymes (12th - 100m, 7th - 200m), 4x100m (14th) and 4x400m (28th). Women - Cockrell (9th - 100m HH, 3rd - 400m IH), Ellis (19th - 200m, 3rd - 400m), Hall (19th - 100m HH), Hill (T-10th - 100m, 3rd - 200m), Iuel (2nd - 400m IH), Mann (12th - SP), Pettigrew (6th - 400m), Sapa (18th - SP), 4x100m (10th) and 4x400m (2nd).

    USC BRINGS 31 ATHLETES TO WEST PRELIMINARY ROUNDS - Trojans that qualified and declared for the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds and the events in which they are scheduled to compete individually are: Women: Destinee Brown (100m), Anna Cockrell (100m HH, 400m IH), Kyra Constantine (400m), Kendall Ellis (400m), Zaria Francis (100m), Dior Hall (100m HH), Deana Hill (100m, 200m), Amalie Iuel (400m IH), Margaux Jones (LJ), Brittany Mann (SP), Cameron Pettigrew (400m), Madisen Richards (LJ), Kayla Richardson (400m), Tanya Sapa (SP), Mikaela Smith (800m) and Ky Westbrook (100m, 200m). Men: Alexander Barnum (100m), T.J. Brock (100m), Randall Cunningham (HJ), Robert Ford (800m), Michael Gonzalez (PV), Matthew Katnik (SP), Ricky Morgan Jr. (400m), Marquis Morris (110m HH), Michael Norman (400m), Nick Ponzio (SP), Alexander Rohani (800m), Eric Sloan (LJ, TJ), Dominic Smallwood (LJ, TJ), Christian Sourapas (100m, 200m) and Just’N Thymes (200m).

    WOMEN AND MEN FINISH SECOND AT PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIPS - The USC women’s team scored 135 points and the men’s team scored 115.5 points to both finish second at the Pac-12 T&F Championships in Eugene, Ore. on May 13-14. Leading the way and winning titles for the Trojans were Kendall Ellis with a meet record in the W-400m, Michael Norman in the M-400m, Eric Sloan in the TJ, the men’s 4x400m relay and the women’s 4x400m relay with a meet record. Finishing second in events were Anna Cockrell (100m HH, 400m IH), Robert Ford (800m), Deanna Hill (W-200m), Nick Ponzio (M-SP), Dominic Smallwood (M-TJ)

    GOOD THINGS HAPPEN WHEN NORMAN RACES -- In the first outdoor race of his USC career Michael Norman set the Trojan freshman 400m record with a winning time of 45.22 at the USC-UCLA Dual Meet on April 30. His second meet was the Pac-12 Championships and he won the conference 400m title with a PR and 10th-fastest time of USC history of 45.15. He defeated the two-time defending champion from Oregon Marcus Chambers and became the first freshman to win the event since 2003. Norman currently ranks seventh in the 400m dash this season.

    COCKRELL NAMED PAC-12 WOMEN’S FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR -- Freshman hurdler Anna Cockrell was named the 2017 Pac-12 Track & Field Women’s Freshman of the Year on May 17. Cockrell, from Charlotte, N.C., took second place in both the women’s 100m hurdles with a time of 13.06 (+0.5) and in the 400m hurdles with a time of 55.54 at the Pac-12 Championships held May 13-14 in Eugene, Ore. She also ran the third leg on USC’s winning 4x400m relay which won with a meet-record time of 3:29.52. Cockrell was the highest-scoring freshman at the conference meet, totaling 18.5 points. In her first 400m hurdles race as a Trojan, Cockrell set the USC freshman record with a time of 55.51 at the Battle on the Bayou in Louisiana on April 8. Her time that day ranks fourth on USC’s all-time list in the event and is the third-fastest time by a collegian this season. She broke the USC freshman record of 56.49 set by 2016 Olympic gold medalist Dalilah Muhammad in 2009. Cockrell has also excelled in the 100m hurdles as she ran a PR of 12.91 (+1.1) to win at the USC-UCLA Dual Meet on April 30. That time ranks fifth on USC’s all-time 100m hurdles list and currently ranks ninth among all college hurdlers. Cockrell becomes the first Trojan woman to win the award since 2007 when Trojan teammates Shalina Clarke and Shana Woods were co-winners. USC’s only other Women’s Freshman of the Year award winner, which began in 2000, was Virginia Powell in 2003.

    SPRING SPORT SUCCESS - Beach Volleyball won its second consecutive NCAA title. Other spring sports and their finish or current status: M-Golf (Won Regional, at NCAA Championships), W-Golf (at NCAA Championships), M-Tennis (L in NCAA Round of 16), W-Tennis (L in NCAA 1st round), W-Water Polo (L in NCAA semis), W-Lacrosse (L in NCAA quarterfinals).
