USC Adds Ponzio & Smallwood To 2014 T&F Recruiting Class

    The USC track and field team has signed thrower Nick Ponzio and jumper Dominic Smallwood to its already strong 2014 track and field recruiting class, it was announced today (July 17) by Director of Track & Field Caryl Smith Gilbert. In February, USC announced the signings of Gabriella Cantrell (women's sprints), Randall Cunningham (men's high Jump), Jerayah Davis (women's sprints), Andre De Grasse (men's sprints), Kendall Ellis (women's 400m), Robert Ford (men's 800m), Dior Hall (women's hurdles), Deanna Hill (women's sprints), Ricky Morgan (men's 400m), Marquis Morris (men's hurdles), Madisen Richards (women's jumps), Madison Ricks (women's 800m), Jordan Wallin (men's 800m) and Ky Westbrook (women's sprints). In addition, USC football recruit Adoree Jackson ranked second among high school long jumpers in 2014.

    Ponzio, the 2013 California high school state champion in the shot put, attended Florida in 2014 but did not compete and will have four years of eligibility remaining. Ponzio has a best shot put of 69-7.25 which is third all-time by a California high school athlete and is the Southern Section record. Ponzio ranked first in the country among high school shot putters in 2013 and went on to win the CIF state shot put title with a mark of 66-2.50. He also placed fourth at the state meet in the discus throw with throw of 184-6. Ponzio owns a best discus throw of 187-8.50. He attended Great Oak High in Temecula, Calif. and was named the 2013 Press-Enterprise Boys Track Athlete of the Year.

    Smallwood of Silverado High in Las Vegas, Nev. is a two-time Nevada state triple jump champion. He broke the Nevada Southern Zone record with a wind-legal triple jump of 50-1.00 this season, which ranked fifth in the country among high school seniors. Smallwood won the 2014 Nevada state championship in the triple jump (48-1.50) and long jump (24-1.25w) and won the triple jump title in 2013 with a leap of 49-2.00. Smallwood placed seventh in 2013 at the USATF Junior Championships in the triple jump with a mark of 47-8.50. He also has a PR in the high jump of 6-7.50.



    In all, USC's track and field recruits won 14 individual state titles during the 2014 high school track season.
