USC's Impressive 2015 T&F Recruiting Classes Both Ranked In The Top 10

    The “Where They Are Going” issue of the Track & Field News has just hit the stands and both the USC women’s and men’s newcomers are ranked in the top 10. USC’s women’s class which will be competing for the Trojans this season include distance runner Amber Gore, hurdler/jumper Jasmyne Graham, jumper Margaux Jones, heptathlete Lyndsey Lopes and distance runner Mikaela Smith. The men’s newcomers include thrower Nathan Bultman, sprinter Zyaire Clemes, thrower Matthew Katnik and jumper Eric Sloan.


    Amber Gore (Redondo Union HS) - Has an 800m best time of 2:10.76...Took 10th at the 2014 CIF State Championships with a time of 2:12.05...Won the 800m at the Junior Olympics as a 13 & 14 year old...In XC, won the 2014 CIF 5K State Championship with a time of 17:22.00...Was 4th at the Nike Pre-Nationals (18:08.77) & 45th at the Nike Cross Country Championships (18:33.00)...As a senior won the CIF SS 3-mile race with a time of 17:03.00 and the Bay League three-mile title with a time of 17:12.26.

    Jasmyne Graham (East Roosevelt HS in Corona, Calif.) - Graham won both the 100m and 300m hurdle races at the CIF state meet en route to being named the 2015 California Girls Gatorade Track & Field Athlete of the Year. She won the 100m HH finals with a time of 13.17 (+1.4) which was the fastest time run by a high school runner in 2015, second all-time in the state and fifth all-time by a high school hurdler. She also posted the fastest high school time this season in winning the 300m IH final with a time of 40.73. She also won the 100m HH (13.29) & 300m IH (41.92) at the 2015 Mt. SAC Relays...She was second at the CIF Championships in the 100m HH as a junior...Also had a long jump PR of 19-8.25 (6.00m) at the 2014 CIF Championships to earn fourth place...Graham also won the long jump at the 2014 California Indoor State Meet



    Margaux Jones (Redlands HS in Redlands, Calif.) - Jones was second at the CIF state meet with a long jump of 20-4.25 (6.20m), which ranked seventh among high schoolers in 2015. She jumped 20-4 to place second in the long jump at the Mt. SAC Relays...As a junior her legal PR of 20-5.50 (6.23m) ranked fourth in the country...she also posted a wind-aided mark of 20-9.00 (6.32m)...She won the CIF state long jump title as a junior with a leap of 20-4.75 (6.21m). She leaped over 6.00m seven times (with 5 wind legal marks) during the 2014 outdoor season.

    Lyndsey Lopes (Edison HS in Fresno, Calif.) - Lopes placed sixth at the USATF Junior Championships in the heptathlon with a PR of 5,069 points, which ranked third among high schoolers in 2015. She won the heptathlon at the 2015 Arcadia Invitational with a then PR total of 4,984 points....In 2014 she had a best of 4,982 points in the heptathlon, the top high school score in the state of California and fifth in the country...Her bests include 14.18 in the 100m HH, 24.52 in the 200m, 2:19.69 in the 800m, 5-6.00 in the high jump, 17-11.00 in the long jump, 100-6 in the javelin throw and 32-6.50 in the shot put. Lopes also has a 300m IH best of 43.67...Placed 10th in the multi-events at the 2014 USA T&F Junior Championships with a total of 4,680 points...Six of the top 10 finishers were college athletes.

    Mikaela Smith (Clovis North HS in Fresno, Calif.) - Won the 800m at the 2015 Arcadia Invitational with a time of 2:08.44 and owns a PR of 2:06.85 run in winning the 2014 CIF State title. She also won the 2013 title and was the second-best qualifier for the 2015 final, but tripped and ended up being disqualified. She won the CIF Central Section 800m title all three seasons she competed in the event. Smith also has an outdoor 400m best of 55.34 and a 1500m best of 4:55.14. Smith captured the 600-yard title with a time of 1:28.87 at the 2013 California Indoor State Meet.


    Nathan Bultman (West Ranch HS in Stevenson Ranch, Calif.) - Had a PR of 64-5 (19.64m) in the shot put which ranked seventh among high schoolers in 2015. He placed second in the shot put with a mark of 63-11.25 at the CIF state meet, behind fellow Trojan freshman Matt Katnik. Bultman also placed seventh in the discus throw at the CIF state meet with a toss of 179-6 (54.71). He also threw 63-8.25 at the Mt. SAC Relays on April 18....Won the 2014 CIF SS title with a mark of 60-11.25 (18.57m)...His high school best in the discus throw is 179-10 (54.83m) and 192-5 (58.64m) in the hammer throw...As a junior he was nationally ranked in the shot put, discus and hammer.

    Zyaire Clemes (Trenton Central HS/Florida State) - He attended Florida State last year, but did not compete and will have four seasons of eligibility beginning this season. Clemes has bests of 46.26 in the 400m, 10.45 in the 100m and 21.29 in the 200m. In 2014, he ranked sixth in the 400m dash nationally and placed second in the event at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals with a time of 46.57. He owns the third-fastest 400m time in New Jersey high school history and set the state 300m record with a time of 33.64 in January of 2014, breaking a record which had stood since 2002. He also won the state 400m title as a sophomore and junior.

    Matt Katnik (St. John Bosco HS in Bellflower, Calif.) - Katnik won the state shot put title with a best mark of 72-0 (21.94m). He had a best mark this season of 72-3 which ranks 10th on the all-time high school shot put list and was the top throw among high school athletes in 2015 by over two feet. Katnik also took fifth in the discus throw at the state meet with a mark of 183-0 (55.77m). Early in the season he had a then shot put PR of 71-3.50 (21.72m) in winning the shot put competition at the 2015 Arcadia Invitational which was just the third throw in California history over 70 feet and the first since 1997...He has strong family ties to USC, father John was a former USC center on the football team (1986-87) and his two brothers and a sister graduated from USC...Cousins include former USC football lineman Norm Katnik (2001-03), tight end Kurt Katnik (2003) and receiver Brad Walker (2004-07).

    Eric Sloan (Delta College in Stockton, Calif.) - Transfers to USC with two years of eligibility...He has a best triple jump of 54-0 (16.46m)...Placed second in LJ at the 2015 Mt. SAC Relays with a PR of 25-10.25 (7.88m)...As a freshman at Delta College, he broke the school TJ record in his first meet with a jump of 51-10 (15.80m) and won the California state title with a jump of 53-6.25 (16.31m)...Also placed second in the LJ with a leap of 25-0.50 (7.63m)...He is a 2012 graduate of Bear Creek HS in Stockton where he also was a WR & DB on the football team.

    USC’s track and field team will open the 2016 indoor season at the UW Indoor Preview in Seattle, Wash. on Jan. 16.
