WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Trojans dropped the rubber match of the series at Wake Forest, 18-5 on Sunday afternoon at David F. Couch Ballpark.

The Trojans (5-2) got off to a fast start in the first inning, as leadoff hitter David Edson (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran HS) drew a walk and right fielder Corey Dempster (South Pasadena, Calif./Loyola HS) cranked his first home run of the year to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead. Lars Nootbaar (El Segundo, Calif./El Segundo HS) followed with a solo home run of his own, his team-leading fourth home run to give the Trojans a 3-0 lead. The back-to-back home runs was the first time since April of 2016 that two Trojans have hit big flies back-to-back.

However, after the Trojans’ fast start it was all Demon Deacons (4-4), as they answered with one run on a Gavin Sheets RBI single in the first inning, added three in the bottom of the second and finished off scoring 15 unanswered runs with 11 in the third inning, knocking out Trojan starter Marrick Crouse (Dana Point, Calif./Dana Hills HS). Crouse took the loss to fall to 1-1 on the year.

The Trojans tacked on one more run in the fourth inning, as pinch hitter John Thomas (Los Angeles, Calif./Harvard-Westlake HS) singled back up the middle to make a 15-4 Demon Deacon lead. Reliever Connor Lunn (Carlsbad, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) was a bright spot for the Trojans, entering in the third inning and after giving up a double to the first batter he faced, he went on to get the Trojans out of that inning and retired five straight at one point, shoring up the Trojan pitching. The freshman struck out a career-high six and did not allow a walk in 4.2 innings, allowing just the 1 run in the fifth inning until surrendering a two-run home run to Stuart Fairchild in the seventh inning.

Trojan junior right-handed pitcher Bryce Dyrda (Oakdale, Calif./Oakdale HS) was strong in his first appearance of the year, throwing a 1-2-3 eighth inning for the Trojans.

Offensively Dempster led the Trojans on the day, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs on a home run and a double.

The Trojans are back in action tomorrow (Monday, Feb. 27) as they finish out the road trip at Duke. Game is set for 3 p.m. ET.
