Trojan Baseball Blanks Duke 2-0 on the Road|
Feb. 27, 2017
DURHAM, N.C. – Behind a career outing from starter Mason Perryman, the Trojans blanked Duke 2-0 at Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Monday afternoon.
The Trojans (6-2) got on the board first in the third inning, as Corey Dempster (South Pasadena, Calif./Loyola HS) launched a solo home run with two outs to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead. The big fly is his second of the season.
The Trojans added another run in the seventh inning, taking advantage of some miscues on defense by the Blue Devils (3-6), and freshman Matthew Acosta (Chino Hills, Calif./Ayala HS) showed off his wheels and some heads up base running, stealing home to give the Trojans an insurance run, 2-0.
That’s all starter Mason Perryman (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield HS) needed, throwing a career-high six innings, allowing no runs on four hits with one walk and one strikeout in the victory. He was backed up by Solomon Bates (Victorville, Calif./Oak Hills HS), who finished off the seventh inning, followed up by freshman Austin Manning (Oakdale, Calif./Oakdale HS), who put up two zeroes in the eighth and ninth for his first career save.
The last time the Trojans pitched a shutout was on May 10, 2015 when Mitch Hart (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS).
The Trojans outhit the Blue Devils eight to six on the day.
The Trojans return home, host USD on Friday, March 3 at 6 p.m. PT in game one of the Dodger Stadium College Baseball Classic at Dedeaux Field.
