No. 9 USC Defeats Visiting Washington State 10-3 in Pac-12 Opener

    LOS ANGELES - The No. 9 USC Trojans defeated visiting Washington State 10-3 in the Pac-12 opener at Dedeaux Field on Friday evening.

    The Trojans (16-2) scored early and often, putting up runs in the first three innings, and scoring in five of eight offensive innings, racking up their 10 runs on 13 hits. Bobby Stahel (Needles, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) led the Trojans with a 4-for-5 day at the plate, with four runs scored. Timmy Robinson (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View HS) drove in a team-high three runs, while Blake Lacey (Clovis, Calif./Clovis HS) and Jeremy Martinez (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mater Dei HS) each drove in two runs.

    The Cougars (11-6) got on the board first, tallying a run against starter Brent Wheatley (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS), but he was able to get out of the jam without any more damage. A run was added in the fifth inning, but was unearned and Wheatley earned his second win of the year, throwing seven complete innings, allowing only one earned run on five hits, with eight strikeouts and three walks.

    The Trojans got to Cougar starter Sean Hartnett early, touching him up for four runs on eight hits as he only made it through three innings before they went to their bullpen.

    The Trojans and Cougars will be back in action on Saturday at 6 p.m. PT for game two of the series. It will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks.
