Complete Team Effort Leads Trojans to 5-4 Win Over No. 12 California

    LOS ANGELES – The Trojans got a statement 5-4 win behind home runs by David Oppenheim and AJ Ramirez to defeat No. 12 California and take the Pac-12 series 2-1 on Saturday at Dedeaux Field.

    The Trojans (9-9, 2-1 Pac-12) tallied five runs on 14 hits to take their first Pac-12 series of the year and their first series win over California (11-6, 1-2 Pac-12) since 2013.

    AJ Ramirez (Phoenix, Ariz./Bakersfield Christian HS) led the way with a 3-for-3 day, including a solo home run and two runs scored. Jeremy Martinez (Fountain Valley, Calif./Mater Dei HS) had his third multi-hit game of the weekend, going 2-for-4 with one RBI.

    David Oppenheim (Mercer Island, Wash./College of the Canyons) got the scoring started as he tallied his first home run of the season, a towering shot to right field in the first inning to put the Trojans up, 1-0.

    Joe Navilhon (Brentwood, Calif./Chabot College) earned his first start in Cardinal and Gold, going four-complete innings of 2-run, 7-hit baseball. He did not issue a walk, while striking out four.

    The Bears tallied runs off Navilhon in the third and fourth innings, but the Trojans took the lead back in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run inning. Corey Dempster (South Pasadena, Calif./Loyola HS) led off the inning with a triple and was driven in by a Reggie Southall (Inglewood, Calif./Serra HS) single. Martinez delivered the second run of the inning with a sac fly.



    In the fifth Ramirez connected on his third home run of the year to push the lead to 4-2.

    The Golden Bears came back with a run in the sixth inning off reliever Andrew Wright (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS). Wright went a solid three-complete innings, allowing just the one run on two hits with three walks and four strikeouts. He pitched out of a big bases-loaded jam in the fifth inning for his first zero of the night. He earned the win to become 1-0 on the year.

    The Trojans added a much-needed insurance run on an Adalberto Carrillo (Santa Ana, Calif./Tustin HS) sac fly to push the lead to 5-3.

    Brooks Kriske (Palm Desert, Calif./Palm Desert HS) entered in the eighth and the Bears added a fourth run after a leadoff double to make it a 5-4 game. Kriske was able to close things out the rest of the way, earning his second save of the year.

    The Trojans will be back in action on Monday, March 21, hosting Cal State Fullerton at 6 p.m. PT. The game will be televised live on Pac-12 Networks.
