No. 8 Trojan Offense Explodes in a 13-0 Victory Over Cal Poly in Game Two

    SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The No. 8 USC Trojans evened the series at Cal Poly in a big way on Saturday evening, tallying 13 runs on 15 hits to defeat the Mustangs 13-0 at Baggett Field.

    Behind a strong six-inning two-hit start from Kyle Twomey (Placentia, Calif./El Dorado HS), the Trojans (18-5) took a 2-0 lead in the fourth and never looked back, adding on four runs in the sixth and seven in the eighth to push their lead to 13-0.

    The Trojans' 15 total hits were the second-most they have had in a game all season. Bobby Stahel (Needles, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) led the way with three hits, while David Oppenheim (Mercer Island, Wash./College of the Canyons) drove in a team-high four runs on two hits. Overall six different Trojans had multi-hit outings.

    In the sixth inning the Trojans chased Mustang (7-12) starter Kyle Smith after five solid innings. With one down, Timmy Robinson (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View HS) walked and Dante Flores (Norwalk, Calif./St. John Bosco HS) singled to put two on. Robinson and Flores executed the double steal, and then Blake Lacey (Clovis, Calif./Clovis HS) hit into a fielder's choice, plating a run. The Trojans then added three more runs against relief pitcher Taylor Chris to make the score 6-0 USC.

    In the eighth inning, the hits parade continued for the Trojans as they tallied seven runs on seven hits against three different Mustang pitchers in the inning to push ahead 13-0.

    Alex Chavarria (Coachella, Calif./Indio HS), Jeff Paschke (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara HS) and Brad Wegman (Temecula, Calif./Great Oak HS) each threw one shutout inning to close out the game after the solid Twomey six-inning start.



    Game three of the series is set for 1 p.m. PT on Sunday at Baggett Stadium.
