STANFORD, Calif. - The USC baseball team dropped game two of the Pac-12 series at Stanford on Saturday afternoon by a score of 6-2.

The Cardinal got out to a 4-0 lead through four innings and never looked back. The Trojans pulled within two in with runs in the seventh and eighth innings, but two more Cardinal runs in the bottom of the eighth pushed the game out of the reach of the Trojans.

Trojan starting pitcher Bob Wheatley (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) had an uncharacteristic five walks in 3.1 innings of work. He allowed four runs, but only two were earned, as the Trojans usually steady defense allowed three untimely errors. The Cardinal took advantage, plating two unearned runs in the second inning and one earned run apiece in the third and fourth innings to take a 4-0 lead. Cardinal starting pitcher Cal Quantrill held the Trojan offense to just three hits through six innings, before the Trojans broke through in the seventh inning thanks to three-straight singles. With one out, Dante Flores (Norwalk, Calif./St. John Bosco HS) singled up the middle and then stole second. Bobby Stahel (Needles, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) then put runners on the corners for Blake Lacey (Clovis, Calif./Clovis HS), who was 3-for-4 on the day and drove in the Flores with a single to put the score at 4-1. That was the end of Quantrill's day, as he was lifted for senior reliever A.J. Vanegas. Vanegas recorded the final two outs to end the Trojans' rally.

The Trojans added another run in the top of the eighth, as Omar Cotto Lozada (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Bonneville School) led off the inning with a double down the right field line. Cotto Lozada came home and Timmy Robinson (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View HS) reached first on a fielding error by the Cardinal shortstop. After a double play and a strikeout, the inning was over and the score was 4-2 Cardinal.

The Cardinal added two more runs in the top of the eighth inning to put the game out of reach, 6-2. Sophomore right-handed reliever Brooks Kriske (Palm Desert, Calif./Palm Desert HS) was solid in 3.2 innings of relief, only allowing one run on three hits while striking out two and walking one. In the bottom of the eighth he was lifted after a leadoff double by Drew Jackson. Sean Adler (Northridge, Calif./Sierra Canyon HS) entered and recorded an out, but a single allowed to Danny Diekroeger plated the fifth run of the day. James Guillen (Covina, Calif./Damien HS) entered and allowed another run to come around on a double before getting a pop out and a strikeout to end the inning.

The Trojans were unable to get anything going in the top of the ninth.

The rubber match of the series is set for 3 p.m. PT on Sunday at Sunken Diamond. The game will be telecast live on Pac-12 Networks.
