Trojans Notch Third Shutout of Season with a 2-0 Victory Over San Diego State|
March 28, 2017
LOS ANGELES -- A solo home run by Matthew Acosta, an RBI single from Corey Dempster and a shutout by the Trojan pitching staff led the Trojans to a 2-0 victory over San Diego State on Tuesday evening at Dedeaux Field.
The Trojans (15-8) outhit the Aztecs (16-9) nine to seven and a combined shutout pitching effort by starter Mason Perryman (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield HS), relievers Connor Lunn (Carlsbad, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) and Bryce Dyrda (Oakdale, Calif./Oakdale HS) was all the Trojans needed to take the second game of the season over the Aztecs.
Acosta (Chino Hills, Calif./Ayala HS) got the Trojans on the board first and that was all they would need, as he launched his first collegiate home run off the score board in right to make it a 1-0 ballgame. Perryman was outstanding, going five complete innings in the start, scattering five hits to a potent Aztec offense, with one strikeout and no walks. He earned his second win of the season to improve to 2-0 on the year.
Reliever Lunn followed with a similarly strong outing, facing the minimum through two innings, not allowing a hit or a walk with two strikeouts to hold the 1-0 lead through seven for the Trojans.
After Dyrda put up a zero in the top of the eighth, the Trojans added an insurance run on a two-out RBI single by Dempster, which extended his hitting streak to 11 games.
The extra insurance run looked like it might be important in the ninth, when Andrew Brown and Danny Sheehan singled back-to-back to lead off the inning against Dyrda. The junior then walked Jordan Verdon to load the bases full of Aztecs with no outs. Dyrda locked in at that point, getting Tyler Adkinson to ground back to the mound, where the Trojans were able to get the lead runner at the plate. Then with the bases still loaded, Dyrda struck out back-to-back Aztecs to strand the bases loaded and solidify his third save of the year.
Lars Nootbaar (El Segundo, Calif./El Segundo HS) was an outstanding three-for-four on the day, with two singles and a double. One single was a perfect bunt down the third base line in the sixth inning.
Tuesday's victory was the second shutout of the Aztecs by the Trojans this season. On March 7 the Trojans defeated the Aztecs 1-0 in San Diego.
The Trojans will be back in action on Friday, March 31 as they start their first Pac-12 road series at Arizona at 7 p.m. PT.
