Trojans Drop Game Two of Series at No. 13 Arizona, 5-1|
April 1, 2017
TUCSON, Ariz. – The Trojans were unable to get things going on Saturday evening at Hi Corbett Field, falling 5-1 to the No. 13 Wildcats in game two of the series.
The Trojans (15-10, 4-4 Pac-12) got on the board first, as Lars Nootbaar (El Segundo, Calif./El Segundo HS) delivered a triple to left center to bring home David Edson (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran HS), who walked to leadoff the game.
However, that was all the Trojans were able to mount offensively, as Arizona (19-7, 4-4 Pac-12) starter Randy Labaut kept the Trojans off balance, not allowing another hit or run through the following five innings, striking out four and walking three.
Getting his first career weekend start, sophomore righty CJ Stubbs (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) held the potent Wildcat offense off the board until the third inning, when the Wildcats tallied two runs on two hits, taking advantage of a wild pitch that brought home the go-ahead run with two outs.
For the second-straight day the Wildcats broke open the game in the fifth inning, tallying three runs on two hits with two outs. Jared Oliva drove home the first run, while JJ Matijevic delivered a two-run home run to make it a 5-1 ballgame.
Stubbs took the loss, giving up five runs on just four hits, with an uncharacteristic six walks and two strikeouts. Reliever Brad Wegman (Temecula, Calif./Great Oak HS) threw the final three frames, not allowing a hit, striking out two with just one walk as he faced just two batters over the minimum.
The Trojan offense was unable to get going against reliever Cody Deason, who earned the save as he threw the final three frames to finish the game, shutting out the Trojans and walking just one with five strikeouts.
The Trojans will look to salvage the series on Sunday, April 2 at 1 p.m. PT at Hi Corbett Field.
