April 2, 2017
LOS ANGELES -- Despite out hitting the No. 13 Wildcats 10-8, the Trojans stranded 12 base runners and fell 8-1 to No. 13 Arizona on Sunday afternoon.
Brandon Perez (Newport Beach, Calif./Mater Dei HS) led the team with a 3-for-5 day at the plate, while the lone Trojan (15-11, 4-5 Pac-12) came on a solo home run by Corey Dempster (South Pasadena, Calif./Loyola HS) in the eighth inning. The home run was his third of the year.
The Trojans had opportunities early, getting two runners on with two down in each of the first two innings. Then in the third inning, Frankie Rios (Lakewood, Calif./Long Beach Poly HS) doubled and was 90 feet away after a wild pitch with two down, but the Trojans were unable to start a two-out rally. Overall on the day the Trojans stranded 12 base runners.
Trojan pitchers held the potent Arizona (20-7, 5-4 Pac-12) offense to just eight hits, but were hampered by nine walks and one hit-by-pitch that came around to hurt the Trojans. Four of the Wildcats' eight runs that came home were batters that reached via the walk, and six of their eight runs came during two-out rallies. Overall the Wildcats tallied one in the second, three in the third and four in the fifth inning. Kyle Lewis and Louis Boyd led the Wildcats with two hits on the day, while Lewis led the team with two RBIs.
Trojan starter Marrick Crouse (Dana Point, Calif./Dana Hills HS) took the loss, going 2.2 innings, allowing three runs on three hits with four walks and no strikeouts.
Wildcat starter Rio Gomez earned the win, going five complete innings, holding the Trojans to just five hits, with one walk and one strikeout.
The Trojans are back in action on Tuesday, April 4, as they travel to Long Beach State for a 6 p.m. PT midweek game.
