April 5, 2016
LOS ANGELES – The Trojans fight back from allowing the game-tying run in the ninth inning to walk off Pepperdine in 10 innings, 6-5 on Tuesday evening at Dedeaux Field.
With runners on the corners and just one out in the bottom of the 10th inning, Timmy Robinson (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View HS) came up with a big single through the left side with the infield in to plate the game-winning run. On the day Robinson was 2-for-5.
Jeremy Martinez (Fountain Valley, Calif./Mater Dei HS) led the way as the Trojans at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a team-leading 2 RBI. Adalberto Carrillo (Santa Ana, Calif./Tustin HS) and Corey Dempster (South Pasadena, Calif./Loyola HS) each had two hits and one RBI on the day.
Freshman Dillon Paulson (Encinitas, Calif./Santa Fe Christian HS) also got things going again at the plate, with a 1-for-1 day, delivering an RBI single in the fourth inning, laying down a sac bunt in the second and drawing a walk in the sixth.
The Trojans got on the board in the bottom of the first inning, manufacturing a run off a Dempster lead off double as Martinez grounded out to bring the run home.
The Waves answered in the bottom half of the inning, plating two runs to take the lead. However, the Trojans answered right back in the bottom half, the start of the back-and-forth contest.
After the Trojans got one in the bottom of the fourth on a Paulson single to take the lead 3-2, the Waves answered with two in the top of the fifth on three hits to make it a 4-3 game.
Martinez singled home another run in the bottom half of the fifth to tie things back up 4-4, and then in the sixth the Trojans took the lead on a sacrifice fly by Carrillo, keying off a Robinson double and a passed ball to put the runner in scoring position.
Trojan starter CJ Stubbs (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) went five solid innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, with one walk and a career-high six strikeouts. He gave way to reliever Brent Wheatley (Villa Park, Calif./Villa Park HS), who went two solid innings, giving way to Marc Huberman (Los Angeles, Calif./Hamilton HS), who threw two-thirds of an inning before giving way to Brooks Kriske (Palm Desert, Calif./Palm Desert HS) with the game-tying run at second base. Kriske got a big strikeout after a walk to end the inning.
Kriske, the Trojans’ closer entered in the ninth to finish things off, but ran into a snag with two outs, as Manny Jefferson hit a solo home run to left field to tie the game, 5-5. Kriske regained his composure to get out of the inning, and put up a zero in the 10th to put the Trojans in position to win in the bottom half of the inning.
Oppenheim (Mercer Island, Wash./College of the Canyons) drew a walk to lead things off, and was lifted for pinch runner Frankie Rios (Lakewood, Calif./Long Beach Poly HS). Martinez then singled through the left side and with the hit-and-run on, the Trojans had runners on the corners with no outs. Robinson battled and hit a sharp grounder than leaped over the glove of Pepperdine shortstop Jefferson as the infield was drawn in to plate the winning run.
The Trojans resume Pac-12 play on Friday, April 5, as they host Utah at 6 p.m. PT to start the weekend series.
