LOS ANGELES – The Trojans dropped a battle with visiting No. 21 Stanford 8-3 in 10 innings on Friday evening at Dedeaux Field.

The Trojans (16-13, 5-6 Pac-12) fought through to tie the game in the sixth inning, but gave up five runs in the top of the 10th to the Cardinal (16-10, 3-5) and were unable to come back.

Lars Nootbaar (El Segundo, Calif./El Segundo HS) and Frankie Rios (Lakewood, Calif./Long Beach Poly HS) each had three hits on the day to lead the Trojans. Dillon Paulson (Encinitas, Calif./Rancho Santa Fe Christian HS) led the way with two RBIs on the day.

The Trojans got on the board in the first when they loaded the bases with nobody out and Rios came through with a single to put the Trojans on the board. A strikeout and a double play prevented the Trojans from having a big inning.

Trojan starter CJ Stubbs (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) put up two clean frames before getting unlucky in the third inning. With two down, he gives up a double to Matt Winaker, gives up a walk to Nico Hoerner before Quinn Brodey doubled in the first Cardinal run of the night. With two down, Stubbs looked to get a ground ball to the shortstop that looked like the final out, but a throwing error by Rios to first allowed two more runs to come home, giving the Cardinal a 3-1 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Trojans tied the ballgame up as Paulson came through with a big one-out single to plate two runs, tying the ballgame, 3-3.

Stubbs was solid in the start, going six complete innings, allowing just three runs (one earned) on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts in the no-decision.

Connor Lunn (Carlsbad, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) came in and recorded two outs in the seventh, but with runners on the corners Quentin Longrie (Mission Viejo, Calif./JSerra HS) came in to face the left-handed hitting Quinn Brodey and Longrie got a big K to end the inning. He then threw 2.2 innings total of solid ball, before getting into unlucky trouble in the 10th inning. After giving up a nubber of a single to the leadoff man, a sac bunt attempt stayed fair to give the Cardinal two base runners. That prompted a five-run inning, with Longrie recording one out before being lifted for Bryce Dyrda (Oakdale, Calif./Oakdale HS), who was not his normal self, giving up three more runs. Austin Manning (Oakdale, Calif./Oakdale HS) also not sharp on the day, but finally was able to get the final out to get the Trojans out of the inning.

The Trojans had chances on the day, including having the go-ahead run on third with two outs in the eighth inning before a strikeout ended the inning. The Trojans also had runners in the ninth and 10th, but were unable to make anything happen. Overall the Trojans stranded eight base runners on the day. Longrie took the loss for the Trojans, his first of the year, while Cardinal reliever Colton Hock threw five innings in relief for the victory.

The rubber match of the series is set for 2 p.m. PT on Saturday afternoon at Dedeaux Field.
