LOS ANGELES - The USC baseball team blasted 13 runs on a season-high 19 hits to defeat the visiting Utah Utes in the rubber match of the series on Sunday afternoon.

The Trojans were anchored with a strong start from sophomore Brent Wheatley (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS), who went 5.1 innings, allowing one unearned run on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts in his first career weekend start.

Seven different Trojans had multi-hit days at the plate, while four had multi-RBI outings. Sophomore shortstop Blake Lacey (Clovis, Calif./Clovis HS) had a career day, going 2-for-3 with a season and career high four RBI.

The Trojans got on the board in the fourth inning, as Lacey drove in two runs on a two-out single to left field. The Utes answered with a run in the top of the fifth inning as they took advantage of a base runner from an error, got a stolen base and a single up the middle.

The Trojans broke the game open in the fifth inning, as they tallied six runs on six hits. Jeremy Martinez (Fountain Valley, Calif./Mater Dei) had a big RBI double, Jake Hernandez (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Los Osos HS) an RBI single, and Lacey and Kevin Swick (La Canada, Calif./Loyola HS) each had two RBI on a single and double, respectively.

Two more runs were added in the sixth inning to make the score 10-1 as AJ Ramirez (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian HS) and Reggie Southall (Gardena, Calif./Serra HS) both drove in runs.

The Trojans added two more for good measure in the seventh and one more in the eighth to take a 13-1 lead.

The Utes got back on the board in the top of the ninth with one run to bring the final score to 13-1.

After Wheatley left in the sixth inning, sophomore lefty Kyle Twomey (Placentia, Calif./El Dorado HS) went 2.2 innings, holding the Utes to just two hits, while striking out three and walking just two. Bernardo Flores (Baldwin Park, Calif./Baldwin Park HS) threw the top of the ninth for the Trojans.

The Trojans will be back in action on Thursday as they host Arizona at 7 p.m. PT at Dedeaux Field. The game will be live on the Pac-12 Networks.
