FULLERTON, Calif. – Despite outhitting the No. 8 Titans, the Trojans fell 13-5 in game two of the series at Goodwin Field on Friday evening.

The Trojans (17-15) tallied their five runs on a game-high 14 hits, but only three were for extra bases as Titan (22-11) starter Connor Seabold worked to scatter the hits, minimizing damage.

The Trojans tallied two runs on a single from David Edson (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran HS) in the third, at the time tying the game 2-2.

A big five-run inning by the Titans put the Trojans under, however, as the five runs were scored on just three hits, helped by one error and three walks.

Trojan starter CJ Stubbs (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS), who took the loss, threw 4.2 innings, allowing seven runs, but just three earned on four hits with four walks and four strikeouts. The bullpen did not pick Stubbs up, however, as reliever Quentin Longrie (Mission Viejo, Calif./JSerra HS) was uncharacteristically wild, walking three-straight batters, one to load the bases and two more to bring home Stubbs’ runs.

Solomon Bates (Victorville, Calif./Oak Hills HS) entered to get the Trojans out of the fifth inning, but ran into trouble in the seventh inning. With one out and two on, he was lifted with an ankle injury for reliever Michael Gates (Huntington Beach, Calif./St. Michael’s Prep), making his collegiate debut. The Titans added six runs to their lead on four hits in the inning to break open the game, as Bates was tagged with four of those runs, Gates with two. Gates went the distance to finish up the game for the Trojans, giving up two runs on two hits with one walk and one strikeout in 1.2 innings of work.

The Trojan offense got to reliever Josh Rios for the second day in a row, tallying three runs on four hits, as freshmen Blake Sabol (Aliso Viejo, Calif./Aliso Niguel HS), Matthew Acosta (Chino Hills, Calif./Ayala HS) and Christian Moya (Diamond Bar, Calif./South Hills HS) each collected RBI doubles in the inning. For Moya, it was the first extra-base hit of his career. Titan reliever Joe Willis came in to record the final out, however, locking down the 13-5 win for the Titans.

The Trojans will be back in action in the rubber match of the series tomorrow (Saturday) at 1 p.m. PT at Goodwin Field.
