FULLERTON, Calif. – The Trojans were outdueled in the rubber match of the series at Goodwin Field, falling 2-1 to No. 8 Cal State Fullerton on Saturday afternoon. The Trojans (17-16) got a solo home run via the bat of Cris Perez (Miami, Fla./Duke) in the seventh inning, his fourth of the year to pull within one, but the offense was unable to get anything else going. On the day the Trojans stranded five base runners.
Titan (23-11) starter John Gavin and closer Brett Conine outdueled Trojan starter Marrick Crouse (Aliso Viejo, Calif./Aliso Niguel HS), along with relievers Austin Manning (Oakdale, Calif./Oakdale HS) and Bryce Dyrda (Oakdale, Calif./Oakdale HS).
Crouse went six solid innings, scattering nine hits with two strikeouts and no walks. The two runs he gave up came with two outs. After an unlucky bloop single, a Zach Weller single and a Hank LoForte triple plated two runs for the Titans.
That was all the Titans needed. Relievers Manning and Dyrda put up zeroes the rest of the way for the Trojans to keep the game close, but Titan starter Gavin threw seven innings, scattering six hits and only allowing the solo home run to C. Perez in the seventh. He struck out three and walked one. Closer Conine shut down the Trojan offense in the final two frames for his seventh save of the year.
The Trojans will be back in action on Monday as they travel to UC Irvine for a 6:30 p.m. contest at Anteater Ballpark. The game is a makeup for a rainout on March 21.
