Box Score
STANFORD, Calif. - Brent Milleville went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI Friday while Austin Yount threw 7 1/3 scoreless innings as the No. 5 Stanford Cardinal shut out the USC Trojans, 4-0, in a Pac-10 Conference series opener. The Cardinal will maintain its first place lead in the conference, one game ahead of tonight's California-Arizona State winner.
Stanford (24-12-2, 9-4) handed USC (19-21, 6-7) its second straight shutout in the last three games as the Trojans have scored just nine runs in their last five games. The Trojans' best chance came in the second when Derek Perren led off with a double, but they were unable to produce a run in the inning.
Drew Storen finished the shutout for the Cardinal with 1 2/3 innings.
USC sophomore shortstop Grant Green (Anaheim Hills/Canyon HS) went 1-for-4 to extend his career-best hitting streak to 15 games. Tommy Milone (5-3) took the loss for the Trojans, throwing eight innings and allowing four runs on nine hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
Jason Castro hit a two-out single in the bottom of the first and scored when Milleville hit a liner down the third base line that just landed fair for an RBI double, giving the Cardinal a 1-0 lead. Milone hit Jake Schlander to lead off the third and Cord Phelps followed with a single. Brendan Domaracki's sacrifice attempt failed as Milone was able to put the runner out at third. Castro flied out to left for the second out, but Milleville burned Milone again with a two-run double to right. Randy Molina completed the scoring with an RBI single to center.
The series continues tomorrow with a 1 p.m. start with a live audio broadcast on usctrojans.com.
