CORVALLIS, Ore. -- The Trojans knocked off No. 1-ranked Oregon State 7-5 in 10 innings on Saturday afternoon, handing the Beavers their first loss of the season at Goss Stadium.

The Trojans (19-21, 6-11 Pac-12) got a huge two-run single off the wall in left in the top of the 10th inning by Cris Perez (Miami, Fla./Duke), giving the Trojans the lead and then some, 7-5. Reliever Austin Manning (Oakdale, Calif./Oakdale HS), who entered in the ninth threw a flawless 10th inning, as he induced a 4-6-3 double play to end the game, preserving the win. The freshman earned the win to advance to 2-1 on the season.

    C. Perez had an outstanding game of the Trojans at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two walks, while Brandon Perez (Newport Beach, Calif./Mater Dei HS) was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and one walk on the day. Dillon Paulson (Encinitas, Calif./Santa Fe Christian HS) came up with a big hit, driving in a team-high three runs on the day, two in the fourth inning on a single and the third in the eighth inning on a fielder's choice. David Edson (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran HS) and Corey Dempster (South Pasadena, Calif./Loyola HS) each drove in runs on the day as well.

The Trojans and Beavers (33-4, 17-3 Pac-12) played a back-and-forth game through the first nine frames, trading runs in every half inning from the third through the fifth.

In the bottom of the sixth inning with the game tied 4-4, the Beavers came up with a two-out single by Christian Donahue to take a 5-4 lead.

However, the Trojans tied the game in the eighth, as Paulson hit into a fielder's choice, were the Beavers chose to go home with it, but B. Perez slid in under the tag and everyone was safe, making it a tie ballgame once again at 5-5.

    C. Perez then took advantage of a big moment in the 10th inning, with the bases loaded and just one out, delivering a long single off the wall in left to plate two Trojans off Beaver closer Jake Mulholland. Mulholland eventually took the loss, falling to 5-1 on the season.

The Trojan pitching staff was strong for the second-straight day, as starter Chris Clarke (Westlake Village, Calif./ Newbury Park HS) went 4.1 innings, scattering eight hits, allowing four runs with two walks. Reliever Connor Lunn (Carlsbad, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) was outstanding, throwing 3.2 innings in relief, holding the top-ranked team to just one run on one hit with three walks and four strikeouts. Manning then came in and faced the minimum through two innings of work, throwing the ninth and 10th to get the victory.

The last time the Trojans got a win over the top-ranked team was on May 25, 2014, when the Trojans defeated these same Oregon State Beavers 3-1 at Dedeaux Field.

The Trojans will be back at Goss Stadium for the rubber match against the Beavers on Sunday, April 30 at 1:05 p.m. PT.
