SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The No. 13 USC Trojans took care of business in game one at Utah, defeating the host Utes 12-7 at Smith's Ballpark on Friday evening.

The Trojans (31-13, 12-7 Pac-12) tallied 12 runs on 11 hits and were led by Jeremy Martinez (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mater Dei HS), who had a 3-for-5 day at the plate with two RBI, while AJ Ramirez (Phoenix, Ariz./Bakersfield Christian HS) and David Oppenheim (Mercer Island, Wash./College of the Canyons) were 2-for-4 with two RBI apiece. Overall five Trojans had two RBI on the day.

The Utes (14-25, 6-12 Pac-12) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after the first inning, but the Trojans answered with two runs of their own in the top half of the second, including the game-tying run coming home on a delayed double steal to even things out, 2-2.

The Trojans then tacked on three more in the top of the third inning to jump out to a 5-2 lead. They followed with one more in the top of the fourth to make it 6-2.

The Utes were not going to go down easily, however, as they touched up and chased starter Tyler Gilbert (Felton, Calif./Santa Barbara City College) in the bottom of the fourth inning. Three runs came around to score as he struggled to find the zone and the Utes pulled within one, 6-5.

In the top of the sixth inning, however, the Trojans broke open the game as they tallied five runs off reliever Trenton Stoltz. Reggie Southall (Inglewood, Calif./Serra HS) led off the inning with a walk and Bobby Stahel (Needles, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) reaches on an error by the shortstop as everyone was safe on the ground ball. Garrett Stubbs (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases for Jeremy Martinez (Fountain Valley, Calif./Mater Dei HS). Martinez singled to right field to bring home one run and Timmy Robinson (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View HS) followed suit with two RBIs. Then against another reliever Bret Helton, Dante Flores (Norwalk, Calif./St. John Bosco HS) really broke open the 9-3 game with a two-RBI single back up the middle to make the score 11-1.

Junior Brent Wheatley (Orange, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) was outstanding out of the pen, going six complete innings, allowing two runs on five hits, while striking out four and walking just one.

The Trojans and Utes both scored in the ninth inning, as Stahel had a sac fly RBI, while Max Schuman and Kellen Marruffo each launched solo home runs for the Utes in the bottom of the ninth, making the score 12-7 USC.

The Trojans and Utes will be back in action at Smith's Ballpark on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. PT for game two of the series. It will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks.
