PULLMAN, Wash. - The USC baseball team touched up Washington State for six runs in the top of the eighth inning, breaking a 1-1 deadlock and cruising to a 7-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field.

The Trojans scored six runs on four hits in the top of the eighth inning, with three runs coming off starter Tanner Chleborad, while three more came off reliever Kellen Camus. Dante Flores (Norwalk, Calif./St. John Bosco HS) led off the inning with his second double of the day. Timmy Robinson (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View HS) then drew a walk and both base runners advanced 90 feet on a passed ball, but the bases were loaded as Omar Cotto Lozada (San Juan, Puerto Rico/The Bonneville School) walked to bring home the go-ahead run. Pinch hitter Bobby Stahel (Needles, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) drew the third-straight walk for the Trojans to bring home another run against reliever Camus. Kevin Swick (La Canada, Calif./Loyola HS) went first-pitch swinging next with a single to right field, plating the third run of the inning. Garrett Stubbs (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) brought home two more next on a single to make the score 6-1 USC. Jeremy Martinez (Fountain Valley, Calif./Mater Dei HS) with a sac fly to left field brought home the final run of the day for the Trojans and push them ahead to the 7-1 victory.

The Cougars took the early lead in the second inning, taking advantage of some Trojan mental errors. After a leadoff walk and a sac bunt, the runner advanced to third on a wild pitch. With one out, Trojan starter Bob Wheatley (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS), got an infield pop up for the second out. He then got the next batter, Ben Roberts to hit a roller to the second baseman, and what looked like an easy 4-3 groundout, he was able to leg out for a single, plating the run.

Wheatley was able to settle back down and get out of the inning without any further damage. The start was stellar for the senior, who took a no-decision, going six complete innings, allowing just one run on three hits, while striking out one and walking four.

The Trojans got the run back in the fifth inning, as Flores doubled with one out and was brought home by Robinson on a single to left center field.

Trojan relievers were solid in the victory, as freshman Jeff Paschke (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara HS) took the win after throwing a scoreless, 1-2-3 seventh inning. Closer Kyle Davis (Garden Grove, Calif./Garden Grove HS) faced the minimum in the eighth and ninth innings, preserving the 7-1 win.

The Trojans are off this week, before hosting California in a three-game Pac-12 series starting on Friday, May 9 at 6 p.m. PT at Dedeaux Field.
