Seven-Run Inning Propels Trojans to an 8-3 Victory Over UC Irvine|

IRVINE, Calif. -- Behind a seven-run third inning and a strong start from Marrick Crouse, the Trojans blasted UC Irvine 8-3 in a Tuesday night clash at Anteater Ballpark.
The Trojans (24-25) tied their season-high of runs scored in an inning as the tallied seven runs in the third inning, due in part to a grand slam by AJ Ramirez (Phoenix, Ariz./Bakersfield Christian HS). The grand slam is his second of the year (ninth overall home run) and third grand slam of his career. David Oppenheim (Mercer Island, Wash./College of the Canyons) was the only other Trojan with multiple RBIs on the day with two. Overall the Trojans tallied their eight runs on 13 hits, with 10 different Trojans collecting at least one hit.
Trojan starter Marrick Crouse (Dana Point, Calif./Dana Hills HS) was outstanding in his first collegiate start, going five complete shutout innings. He held the Anteaters to just two hits, while striking out a career-high five without allowing a walk. He earned his first win of the year.
The Trojans chased Anteater (28-22) starter Ben Richey in the third inning after allowing the grand slam to Ramirez. He took the loss after allowing six runs on eight hits through 2.1 innings.
After taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a Corey Dempster (South Pasadena, Calif./Loyola HS), the Trojans tallied seven runs on sixth hits, as they sent 12 men to the plate in the third inning.
With an 8-0 lead, Clouse continued cruising through the next three frames, before giving way to CJ Stubbs (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS), who pitched a flawless sixth inning before spending the final three innings behind the plate.
In the seventh inning, the Anteaters got on the board as Bernardo Flores (Baldwin Park, Calif./Baldwin Park HS) allowed four-straight hits and one run scored. He gave way to Brent Wheatley (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) entered and got a strikeout, line out and ground out to end the inning without any further damage.
Wheatley threw a flawless eighth, before giving way to Jeff Paschke (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara HS) in the bottom of the ninth. After a lead off walk, he allowed two runs to come around on two hits to make the final score 8-3.
The Trojans will return to the friendly confines of Dedeaux Field after four games on the road, hosting Oregon State in a pivotal Pac-12 series starting on Friday, May 21 at 7 p.m. PT.
