FULLERTON, Calif. - The USC baseball team jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but after that it was all Cal State Fullerton, hammering 17 runs on 16 hits to defeat the Trojans 17-3 on Tuesday evening at Goodwin Field.

The Trojans got to Titan senior starter Christian Coronado in the top of the first inning, as Jeremy Martinez (Fountain Valley, Calif./Mater Dei HS) started a two-out rally. Martinez was one of the bright spots on the day for the Trojans, going 2-for-5. Jake Hernandez (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Los Osos HS) doubled to left center field to plate Martinez. Hernandez then advanced to third on an error by the Titans catcher. Timmy Robinson (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View HS) drew a walk to put two on with two down. Blake Lacey (Clovis, Calif./Clovis HS) came through with the second double of the inning for the Trojans to score Hernandez and Robinson and give the Trojans a 3-0 lead.

Trojan starter Brent Wheatley (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) struggled from the start and was hit hard, allowing five runs on five hits, while walking one and hitting another, as he only made it two-thirds of an inning. Kyle Twomey (Placentia, Calif./El Dorado HS) recorded the final out of the inning with a strikeout, but the Trojans trailed 5-3 heading into the second inning.

Twomey put up a zero for the Trojans in the bottom of the third inning, he allowed three runs on four hits in the bottom of the third inning to give the Titans the 8-3 lead.

The flood gates continued to open in the bottom of the fourth inning. James Guillen (Covina, Calif./Damien HS), who entered in the bottom of the third inning to record the final out of the inning, struggled in the bottom of the fifth, only getting one out and allowing five runs on two hits with two walks to put the score at 13-3 Titans. They would add two more runs on reliever Jeff Paschke (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara HS) in the fourth as seven runs total came across in the inning. Those seven runs are the most the Trojans have allowed in one inning this season.

The Titans added two more run in the sixth inning, as they countered the Trojans' three runs in the first inning with 17 unanswered runs.

Trojan pitchers Marc Huberman (Los Angeles, Calif./Hamilton HS) and Nigel Nootbaar (El Segundo, Calif./El Segundo HS) threw one scoreless inning apiece, holding the Titans off the board in the seventh and eighth innings. Huberman struck out one, while Nootbaar tallied two strikeouts.

Freshman AJ Fritts (Los Angeles, Calif./The Brentwood School) got his first collegiate at bat in the top of the ninth, and fellow freshman Corey Dempster (South Pasadena, Calif./Loyola HS) singled in the inning for his first collegiate hit.

The Trojans will regroup as they head into their final Pac-12 series of the season, hosting No. 1 Oregon State at Dedeaux Field. Game one of the series is set for 4 p.m. PT at Dedeaux Field. All three games on the weekend will be on the Pac-12 Networks.
