SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- The Trojans drop their final midweek contest of the season, 11-2 to host UC Santa Barbara at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
Trojans starter Mason Perryman (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield HS) went through the lineup easily in the first inning, including two strikeouts. However, in the second inning the Gauchos got to the Trojans with two outs. An infield single plated a runner from third for the first run and then a single to left center was bobbled by the center fielder, allowing the Gaucho runner to score all the way from first, making it a 2-0 game.
Then in the bottom of the third the Gauchos again scored a run with two-outs, this time it was a solo home run from power hitter Austin Bush, making it 3-0 Santa Barbara.
The Trojans got the run back in the top of the fourth however, as Adalberto Carrillo (Santa Ana, Calif./Tustin HS) singled to lead off the inning and then with one out, freshman catcher Blake Sabol (Aliso Viejo, Calif./Aliso Niguel HS) collected a double off the wall in right center, scoring Carrillo all the way from first to get on the board.
In the fifth inning Bush strikes again for the Gauchos. After back-to-back singles with one out, he launches an RBI double down the right field line to make it a 4-1 game. With two on and two out, Perryman walks a batter to load the bases, but he gets a pop up on the infield to get out of the jam, leaving the bases loaded.
That would be the end of Perryman's day. He went five complete innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits with three walks and five strikeouts, tying his career high.
In the sixth inning the Gauchos get to reliever Brock Larson (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./USF), touching him up for two runs, neither earned, on two hits, taking advantage of an error that extended the inning.
With a 6-2 lead, the Gauchos piled more on in the bottom of the seventh against reliever Chris Clarke (Westlake Village, Calif./Newbury Park HS). Tommy Jew notched a double to plate Kenny Corey, who singled to lead off the inning, making it 7-2 Gauchos. Then with two on and one out, Landon Silver delivered a two-run triple to make it 9-2. A Colton Burns sac fly put the 10th run on the board for the Gauchos, fourth in the inning.
Gaucho starter Ben Brecht went seven complete innings, and the lefty kept the Trojans off balance, allowing two runs on seven hits with no walks and five strikeouts.
Right-handed reliever Chris Clements entered for the Gauchos in the eighth and Lars Nootbaar (El Segundo, Calif./El Segundo HS) drew a one-out walk, but the Trojans were unable to make anything happen in the inning.
In the bottom of the eighth against freshman righty reliever Michael Gates (Huntington Beach, Calif./St. Michael's Prep). Gaucho centerfielder Tommy Jew knocked home a solo homer, his fourth of the season to make it an 11-2 ballgame.
Against Gaucho righty reliever Conner Roberts, the Trojans made two quicks outs before pinch hitter Matthew Acosta (Chino Hills, Calif./Ayala HS) and left fielder Brady Shockey (Irvine, Calif./J Serra HS) tally singles, but they are stranded to end the game.
Nootbaar led the Trojans with a 2-for-4 day at the plate. Perryman took the loss for the Trojans, falling to 2-2 on the season.
The Trojans ready for the final weekend of the season, heading up to Washington for a three-game Pac-12 series, Thursday, May 25 through Saturday, May 27. Game one is set for 6 p.m. PT on Thursday at Husky Ballpark. All three games will be televised live on Pac-12 Networks.
