May 27, 2017
SEATTLE, Wash. – Despite outhitting Washington 15-12, the Trojans could not overcome big fourth and fifth innings for the Huskies, falling 7-4 in the series and season finale on Husky Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Trojans (21-34, 8-22 Pac-12) were led at the plate on the day by Brandon Perez (Newport Beach, Calif./Mater Dei HS), who was 4-for-5 with one RBI and one run scored, along with freshman Matthew Acosta (Chino Hills, Calif./Ayala HS), who was 3-for-4 with one run scored. Seniors Corey Dempster (South Pasadena, Calif./Loyola HS) and Frankie Rios (Lakewood, Calif./Long Beach Poly HS) were both 2-for-4 in their final contests with the Trojans.
The Huskies (28-26, 14-16 Pac-12) struck first, as John Naff led off the second with a solo home run, making it a 1-0 ballgame. However, Trojan starter Chris Clarke (Westlake Village, Calif./Newbury Park HS) settled in to prevent any further damage in the inning.
The Trojans answered back with a run of their own in the top of the third, as B. Perez delivered a two-out RBI single.
However, big innings for the Huskies in the fourth and fifth innings ended up doing in the Trojans. In the fourth they tallied two runs on three hits, although the Trojans were able to limit the damage, stranding two. Then with a 3-1 lead in the fifth the Huskies tallied three more runs on three hits to push the lead to 6-1.
The Trojan offense went cold after the third inning, with the next hit not coming until the sixth inning with two outs when a Rios single broke the drought.
The Trojan offense got to Husky reliever Greg Minier in the eighth inning, making a push with a big rally, tallying three runs on six hits, taking advantage of two Husky errors. Dempster delivered an RBI single and the other two runs came home on errors. With the score 6-4, the Trojans had pinch hitter Tyler Pritchard (Lake Elsinore, Calif./Temescal Valley HS) on second with two down and Acosta at the plate. Acosta singled to left, but Pritchard rounded third too hard and was picked off trying to dive back to the bag for the final out, thwarting the rally.
In the eighth off Trojan reliever Mason Perryman (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield HS) the Huskies executed the safety squeeze play with runners at the corners, nobody out to bring home an insurance run, making it 7-4. Perryman got out of the inning without any further damage.
In the ninth Brady Shockey (Irvine, Calif./JSerra HS) led off the inning with a single, but a double play erased the leadoff base runner. B. Perez tallied a two-out single, but the Trojans were unable to do anything with it, as a pop up ended the game.
Trojan starter Chris Clarke, who went five complete, took the loss, while Husky starter Jordan Jones, who went six complete, earned the win, allowing just one run on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
Saturday’s loss marked the final game of the careers of six Trojans – OF David Edson, UTIL AJ Fritts, RHP Brock Larson, C Cris Perez and INF Frankie Rios. (Rios has one more year of eligibility, but he earned his undergraduate degree).
