Trojans Defeat San Diego in Nine-Inning Scrimmage, 10-6

    LOS ANGELES- The USC baseball team tested its skills against a true opponent for the first time this fall as they defeated the University of San Diego, 10-6 in nine innings on Sunday afternoon.

    The Trojans and Toreros played a total of 14 innings on the day, simulating high-pressure situations in two innings before the nine-inning contest and again in the final three frames.

    Nine Trojan pitchers saw action over the 14 innings and freshman lefty Bernardo Flores(Baldwin Park, Calif./Baldwin Park HS) earned the win in the nine-inning contest as he was flawless in the sixth and seventh innings, not allowing a walk or a hit through two complete.

    Sophomore righty Brent Wheatley (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) also threw two shutout innings, striking out one and not allowing a hit. Left-handers Marc Huberman (Los Angeles, Calif./Hamilton HS) and right-handers Brooks Kriske (Palm Desert, Calif./Palm Desert HS) and James Guillen(Covina, Calif./Damien HS) each threw one scoreless inning.

    The Trojan offense pounded out 18 hits compared to 11 by the Toreros, with three of those coming for extra bases. Omar Cotto Lozada (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Bonneville School) started off with a triple in the first at-bat of game, while Timmy Robinson (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View HS) and Jake Hernandez(Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Los Osos HS) both had doubles in the contest.

    Overall, 15 of 21 Trojans had at least one hit in the game, with Cotto, AJ Ramirez (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian HS) and Dante Flores (Norwalk, Calif./St. John Bosco HS) each having two-hit performances. Freshmen Jeff Paschke (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara HS) and Joe Corrigan (Santa Monica, Calif./Harvard-Westlake HS) had two RBI apiece in their Trojan debuts, while sophomores Vahn Bozoian (Chino Hills, Calif./Ayala HS) and Kyle Davis(Garden Grove, Calif./Pacifica HS) also each tallied two RBI to lead the team.

    The Trojans have one final fall contest on Saturday, November 23 at Long Beach State. The scrimmage is set to start at noon at Blair Field.
