Stubbs Named a Semifinalist for the Johnny Bench Award|
May 14, 2015
LOS ANGELES - USC senior catcher Garrett Stubbs was named one of 20 semifinalists for the prestigious Johnny Bench Award, given to the top collegiate catcher nationally.
One key criteria in determining the semifinalists is that they must be the starting catcher for their team in 75% of the games.
Stubbs (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) has thrown out 20-of-41 would-be basestealers this season, good for top five nationally. At the plate he is second on the team with a .340 batting average and also ranks second with 12 doubles. The highly-athletic Stubbs has driven in 22 runs and ranks third in the Pac-12 with 18 stolen bases (18-of-25).
Stubbs is the first Trojan catcher to be named a semifinalist since Jeff Clement won the award in 2005.
Ballots will be sent to the national voting panel at the end of May for a vote to determine the three finalists. The finalists will be announced June 2, 2015. A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series. All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced at the 18th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 25, 2015.
