June 10, 2015
LOS ANGELES - USC junior right-handed pitcher Brent Wheatley was drafted in the 17th round of the 2015 MLB First Year Player Draft by the Oakland Athletics on day three of the draft.
Wheatley (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) was the 518th selection overall. He is the 17th Trojan all-time to be drafted by the Athletics, and the first since Shane Boras was taken in the 39th round of the 2011 draft. Current Trojan major leaguer Grant Green, now with the Angels, was the 13th overall pick by Oakland of the 2009 draft.
The junior has been a huge part of the Trojan pitching staff since his freshman season in 2013. He started his career coming out of the pen in 2013, but quickly moved to the Tuesday starting role. Last year in 2014, he was the Trojans Saturday starter for much of the season, following his older brother Bob, who started on Fridays. As a junior in 2015, he started the season off hot as the Trojans Friday night ace, before moving to the pen. He finished the year with a 4-4 record through 17 appearances (nine starts). He had an ERA of 4.50 through 70.0 innings of work. He struck out 63 total and held opponents to a .267 batting average.
His older brother Bob was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays after his senior season in 2014 as their 26th round pick.
Wheatley becomes the fourth Trojan taken in the draft and the 312th overall.
