LOS ANGELES -- As the USC baseball team takes to Dedeaux Field to start fall ball today, the squad welcomes 15 newcomers as the 2015 recruiting class, which includes 12 true freshmen and three transfers. The group joins a Trojan team which boasts 25 returners from the 2015 squad that made the NCAA Regionals for the first time since 2005.
On the class, head coach Dan Hubbs, who enters his fourth season in 2016, said, "We are very excited about this class. We are bringing in some very talented pitchers, as well as some very good hitters who all have a chance to contribute immediately.
The highly-touted class boasts seven pitchers, seven hitters and one two-way athlete. Pitcher Marrick Crouse was the only one of the class to be drafted, taken in the 11th round of the 2015 MLB Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays. This class also boasts some familiar names to Trojan fans, as the younger brother of Garrett Stubbs (2015 Johnny Bench Award Winner), CJ Stubbs, joins the Trojans as a talented two-way catcher/pitcher, while Lars Nootbaar, the younger brother of former Trojan pitcher Nigel Nootbaar, joins the squad as a standout infielder/outfielder.
The class also boasts some power hitters from the left side in Santa Fe Christian's Dillon Paulson and Hart's Austin Russ. Both bring lengthy resumes to Troy, with Paulson being named the seventh-best first baseman in the class of 2015 by Perfect Game, while Russ is ranked 14th nationally.
Standouts joining the pitching staff include left-hander Quentin Longrie
out of JSerra Catholic High School in San Juan Capistrano, Calif., right-hander Solomon Bates
from Oak Hills High School in Victorville, Calif. and right-hander Henry Stellwagen
from Loyola High School in Los Angeles. Batterymate Kaleb Murphy
, an All-State selection out of Excelsior Charter in Apple Valley, Calif., will bolster the Trojan catching core.
Joe Navilhon, a transfer from Chabot College who previously competed at Cal State Fullerton, is a right-handed pitcher with a lot of experience that should make an in instant impact on the Trojan pitching staff.
