USC Adds Duke Transfer Thornton To Men's Basketball Team

    LOS ANGELES – Former top 15 national recruit point guard Derryck Thornton has transferred to USC from Duke where he was the starting point guard as a freshman in 2016, it was announced by men’s basketball head coach Andy Enfield today (June 30). Thornton will have to sit out the 2016-17 season due to transfer rules and will have three seasons of eligibility remaining beginning with the 2017-18 season.

    The 6-2 Thornton, from Chatsworth, Calif., started at point guard in 20 of Duke’s 36 games last season and averaged 7.1 points and 2.6 assists per game. He was second on the team in total assists (93) and sixth in total points (255) and minutes played (35). His assist total ranks 10th all-time on Duke’s freshman list and his 1.58:1 assist to turnover ratio ranks tied for seventh all-time by a Blue Devils’ freshman.

    Thornton scored in double figures seven times, with a season-best of 19 points vs. VCU on Nov. 20, 2015. He had five or more assists four times, with a season-best of seven vs. Virginia Tech on Jan. 9, 2016. In his 20 starts he averaged 8.7 points.

    Thornton graduated from Findlay Prep (Nev.) in 2015 as the No. 11 ranked player by and the No. 14 ranked player by He was rated as the No. 13 player in the 2015 class by the Recruiting Services Consensus Index. He reclassified to 2015 to graduate early, after leading Findlay Prep to a 29-3 record and averaging 17.0 points, 6.2 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game as a junior. Thornton led his team to the semifinals of the Dick’s Sporting Goods High School Nationals tournament in 2015. As a sophomore, he helped lead Findlay Prep to a 31-5 record while averaging 11.6 points and 7.7 assists per game.

    Thornton was named to the 2013-14 U.S. Basketball men’s Developmental National Team on March 27, 2013. He is the son on Derryck Thornton, Sr. who played collegiately at Azusa Pacific and professionally in Germany. His mother’s name is Liz and he has three sisters, Brandee, Skylar and Jordyn.
