USC offensive tackle Zach Banner has been named one of 10 NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision student-athletes selected as finalists for the Senior CLASS Award.

The Senior CLASS Award is given to student-athletes who excel both on and off the field. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.

CLASS, an acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

Other finalists are Jake Butt, Michigan; Jake Elliott, Memphis; Evan Engram, Mississippi; Jordan Evans, Oklahoma; O.J. Howard, Alabama; Zay Jones, East Carolina; Chad Kelly, Mississippi; Tyler Orlosky, West Virginia; and Tre’Davious White, LSU.

Banner is a 3-year starter at right offensive tackle who earned All-Pac-12 first team honors in 2015. He earned his bachelor’s degree in communication last fall and now is working on a second bachelor’s degree in sociology. After his playing career, he plans to pursue a career in broadcast journalism. He has interned with USC Sports Properties and FOX Sports.

A 2016 USC team captain, Banner is very involved in USC Athletics’ community outreach efforts. Among his community service, he speaks at local elementary, middle and high schools about the importance of education, he participates in the annual USC Swim With Mike swim-a-thon to raise money for physically challenged athletes’ scholarships and he has been involved with the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation (pairing children battling pediatric brain tumors and other cancers with athletes).

The finalists were chosen by a media committee from a list of 30 candidates announced in September. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to help select the winner. Fans are encouraged to vote on the website through December 12. Fan votes will be combined with media and Division I head coaches' votes to determine the winner.

The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the bowl season in early January 2017.
